The only time I did this was when I made my Gerry Anderson UFO series alien in a spacesuit model :: I had to attach 2 extra body segments helmet' (which rotates on its seating) andfaceplate' (which lifts). In that case I did it by hacking his CR2 file with a text editor, but I had to be very careful and know exactly what to do and what I was doing.
