Well, I actually started looking through my Bryce stuff(a chewed-on box, faded manual, & CD)...and the earliest date I can find anywhere in my (yes, Metacreations) Bryce 4.0, is on the actual CD in a readme file for Adobe Acrobat Reader 3. The readme states it was updated on June 10th, 1997. It also gives known issues that it has with Internet Explorer 3.0 and Windows 3.1...jeez.
