Sorry caught up with this thread a bit late. I hate it when the technology gets in the way of the creativity.
I work in IT and have just finished re-configuring my home network and that of a client's. Neither contains any Norton products at all. After testing and using all versions of Norton AntiVirus, Firewall and Utilities released over the last year, I have ditched the lot. The hassle involved with Norton apps far outweighs any benefits.
Bad news: none of the Norton products uninstall cleanly under 98, 98SE or 2000. Believe me I have been through the pain barrier with uninstalling Norton stuff. It sucks, big time. It also runs processes as services so that they are not always visible in Task Manager. Same goes for McAfee's stuff too.
My advice is to 1. back up everything important, 2. reinstall the OS and all your apps., 3. reinstall your data, 4. use ZoneAlarm firewall (www.zonelabs.com) and AVG AntiVirus (www.grisoft.com). Both free, both very effective, both shut down cleanly for rendering. :-))
For good measure go to www.bysoft.com and download their excellent RAM cleaner program, "FreeRAM". It's free!
For the record I do not work for nor am I affiliated with any of these companies. Recent experience has taught me that this stuff works.
