Yes, this is a business (no one here has ever implied otherwise). And yes, Jack is defending his business. What is wrong with that? He has not asked any of us for money. He does not require any dues to be a member here. He provides a valuable service and he does it well. If he can make a living doing that, who am I to be upset about it? I don't get upset at Safeway for making money selling me groceries. I don't get upset at Macy's for making money selling me clothes. If I find the price fair and the service reasonable, I continue to do business there. I find the price here (free) very fair and the service exceptional! I think the thing that dismayed me the most about Ian's email was the implication of hatred. Just because people disagree with you does not mean they hate you. Sure, there are a few people who have made some rather strong statements, but I have seen no hatred expressed toward PFO on this forum. And isn't it odd how the big bad business has managed to pull together a group of people in a very short time that has become a family? Perhaps it is for the very reason that it is a business, dedicated to principals of fairness and open expression. And that they stick to their principals rather than letting ego and emotion rule.
