Let me assure you that Tailor does work on characters with custom morphs; I've done it (that's how Spitfire and Nuriko have clothes). It doesn't transfer scaling, however. (At least, I don't think so). Do your characters have custom-scaled parts, by any chance? I would also second JDexter in checking out Ron Knight's tutorial. It takes you through step by step.
