I found the problem on my end anyway. The ATI drivers that come from Microsoft do not support OpenGL. Even though everything worked, I had the problem of the flashing cursor. I upgraded the video drivers and voila!, problem went away. Mitch -- you might check to make sure you have the latest video driver. As I said, that was my problem, and my symptoms were exactly the same as yours.
