I had this problem with my old computer. Switched to Windows XP and now works great. If you are using Windows 95, 98, or ME, you should not use the high res textures with Vicky or Mike. That will reduce the lockups. Otherwise, what I found was to save the scene, reboot, and then render. Seemed to work, but you only get one render, then have to reboot before it will render again.
