Hello HotChef...

I think the answer is to look around you. The graphics industry 2D and 3D has plenty of opportunities for talented people just about everywhere you look.

From the small local press companies to major international ad design firms to in-house graphics for a plethora of companies and institutions to freelance and contract work the opportunities are there. However, Photoshop skills alone are usually not enough.

Most graphic designers today need a solid working knowledge in at least three basic software programs. Photoshop is definetly on that list wherever you go. You should also consider becoming adept in programs like Adobe Illustrator and PageMaker/InDesign, or Quark express. These are the mainstay of the print industry and a solid foundation in each is almost a requirement.

If you are thinking about doing Graphic Design for online or broadcast then in addition to Photoshop you will need other skills such as HTML, Macromedia Flash, Premiere or Final Cut Pro, and/or any other programs that are specific to the area you want to pursue.

With that said, Photoshop is still a great place to start. The skills and knowledge you gain using this program will carry over into many other areas. And it can be great fun while you are figuring out a direction.
