I have a shareware tool that might really do the trick for what you are doing with the fabrics. Its called xfader and I use it frequently for taking existing textures and making them tileable. Check out the info on it here: http://www.pegtop.de/xfader.htm Sweet little app, easy to use and small to DL. If I remember right its around $20 to register. For me, its been worth every penny. Textures for 3d is not its only use...think web site backgrounds, desktop textures...etc.
