Well, HardRock, I went to a rural school in the 1960's and our desks were made entirely of this cheap-looking pressed wood with no stain and only a lightly-lacquered finish(Similar to what you see in this pic). I actually tried several different wood grain procedural textures before I settled on this one. When I tried darker woods, 1. it just didn't look like I remembered it, and 2. the grain became stronger and made the focal point of the work the grain itself, I thought. Thanks for the comments!
