A common problem with newer version of windows is that it masks the file extension, so even if you add a new one by renaming the file, the old one remains but isn't visible untill you turn viewing suffixes back on. This will of course affect the way applications map to specific file types. You can usually find this under either "folder options" or via the "view" menu in explorer, it's on a serperate tab on the "properties" menu (I think) works for everything but differs depending on what OS you're using, (did it today for a Notes server running NT...)
