Subject: Zip Error

ocddoug ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 1:54 AM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 2:52 AM

I downloaded a product here, but when I tried to open the zip I got this error message: "cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive if you downloaded this file, try downloading the file again" I would have tried to download again, but it's a 4 hr download! And I'm using dial-up. Should I contact the owner of the product? Not sure what to do now. Thanks, Doug

Doug Zip files can become corrupt when downloading. Your best shot is to try and download it again. Also when downloading dont do any thing else on your computer like surfing the net. Ron

Ok, I will try the download again. Thanks, Ron. Doug

I tried the download again but I got booted off the net. When I tried to continue, or start over, the Download button was gone...I hit refresh, the same thing. Am I out of luck? Doug

It was a gift from Bluevenus --I won a contest she hosted, the prize a $5 purchase at the store. I believe it should still be under my Public Wishlist. Let me know if you need any more info. Doug

Perfect...Thanks for the info. I've re-enabled the download button for you. Let me know if you continue to have problems. Clint

I give up. I keep getting knocked offline after 2 hours. MSN really blows. It's just too big of a file, I should have picked something smaller. Thanks for your help. Doug

ClintH ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 8:17 PM

Doug - Hang tight. I'll get you fixed up. We have a few other trick to try. :) 1) I can E-Mail the file to you. Its 28.6mb in size. Will your E-Mail account handle a file of that size? 2) I can give you another address to try and DL the file from. 3) you can have it burned to disk and shipped to you for real cheap. :) Let me know which route you would like to try next. I don't think I'm meant to have this product lol...I've tried to zip out much smaller files from my email addresses and got the "file too large" message. So, I assume I will have the same problem downloading 28 megs. I guess I can try downloading from a different address, see if that works. Thanks for your patience. Doug

Same thing, got booted, this time at 72%. I was unable to continue with the dl. No need to start all over again. Time to move on lol...thanks for your persistence though. Doug

Doug, have you gotten that file yet? I believe the MSN file limit for emails is around 1 or 2MB... Heck I don't know any ISP who'd give you 28MB for email file sizes. Are you using a firewall and/or antivirus program? If so, you might try disabling them while you download. If you're not visiting any other site during that time, you shouldn't need to worry about viruses coming into your computer. If you still haven't figured this out, you might want to send me an email or IM. I used to work tech support for MSN, and we can see if there are any tricks we can try here. Ron

Split the zip file into several small files, then down it or email it one by one, then combine it to get the original large zip file. I ues this way send the large file always succeed when I use the dial up connection. this is my suggestion. Good lucky!

Thanks for the posts. I've tried everything short of driving to Renderosity and picking it up. Clint even gave me a new address to download from, but as usual I got booted from MSN before the download completed. I was hoping to continue the download where I left off, but it started at the beginning. Neither of my email clients will allow that big of a file size (MSN & Yahoo). So, no biggie. I've given up. The product was a gift from a contest I won ($5), so it's cool. At least now I know not to try these insane 28 mg downloads! Doug
