actually I made the cross, j/k :) I hope the person is too ashamed to come back. Rob

I saw this thread some weeks ago. Hey wolf, It looks like you pretty much took it over. ;)

TygerCub ( ) posted Tue, 25 June 2002 at 3:52 PM

I'll second that. The gel hair is very recognizable, no matter what color you put on it. As for the figure, it looks like it has the vic/stef genitals prop added too.

Blackhearted ( ) posted Tue, 25 June 2002 at 5:20 PM

lol... yeah, thats pretty recognisably Tuesday & the tattooed body tex from the Tuesday & Ophelia Mega Pack in the rosity MP by Kiera and myself. i mean geez, if they were going to claim a morph and skin texture as their own, could they have at least picked a LESS recognizeable one? hehe... id also have lit it more from the bottom left, that strong shadow on her face isnt very flattering from that direction. personally, i am very pleased when anyone uses my work in ANYTHING - commercial or personal images... but it does get under my skin when people claim the textures, etc to be their own work. pretty much the only thing in this image that isnt a premade item is the cross - the pose, expression, face & body morph, texture and even the lighting is from our pack in the marketplace and the actual mesh itself is daz3d's stephanie. the hair looks like the daz3d millennium gel hair. id have used kozaburo's free short hair myself :) cheers, -gabriel

Geez guys. Did this person say he created everything in the image or just the image itself? Seems like it doesnt take much these days to start a lynch mob.

wolf359 ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 8:25 AM

Dave,

he claimed to have created the model
Saying"this is my first attempt a creating a figure"
he did NOT say rendering or posing or lighting a figure

he posted this
in the "work in progress" forum at the Cg channel
and when he was praised for his incredible modeling skills he accepted the praise until some one yelled
"POSER" and he suddenly went silent.

Not the biggest "crime" in the world but there was a clear attempt at deception by omission.

Well I think it would've helped to have at least a link to that posting so that everyone was up to speed. I read this thread and it sounded like yet again we were going after somebody. Sorry but I have a tendency to play Devil's Advocate in these situations and immediately was ready to defend the guy. But now that I have more of the facts, I think he's and idiot or doesnt know his english very well. It might still be a good idea to notify him of this thread so he could at least put his 2 cents in. I'd hate for people to be blasting me over something and not have the right to defend or explain myself.

the problem as i see it is that somehow poser is a taboo subject to many of the "Pros"

I post my poser animations renderd in cinema 4DXl, in other " high end" forums all the time
they dont look like poser renders due to hi quality raytracing in cinema4DXl

its funny!! many of these guys recognize Mike and vicky
and never respond publicly to my work in the open forums

But i always get private emails from members
begging to know how im doing this with cinema

and the ones who DONT recognize my poser figures
unknowingly give honest critiques of my animation skills unhamperd by their usual irrational Bias against poser

why does this neat little 3D character program
evoke so much FEAR in some people???

Because while some people do awesome animations like you, or use Poser for important things like medical illustrations or safety posters, a vast majority of Poser users create cheesecake pinups like this one. ;)

Dave ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 9:22 AM

Maybe they think it's cheating since you pretty much have to create by hand in the high end programs the figures you need. Or they just might have trouble with change. They may have had to build their figures the hard way (pre-Poser) and look down on this new "shortcut".

starmkr ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 9:43 AM

You know the guy should not be getting a beating...He may be a newbie to Poser like we all were at one time and to him changing the dials does infact create his first modeling. The key word is "Modeling" Modeling can mean the creation or "Modeling" can be person employed by artist to pose..he employed the service of Stephanie...

Kiera ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 9:56 AM

The point is that he changed no dials. It is stock stephanie with all our MORs, poses, and lighting applied. Then he said it was his work. =p

im honestly getting sick and tired of poser being pigeonholed as a worthless program for newbies. anyone that creates an awesome image with it - an image that gets wonderful critiques and praise - is suddenly discredited and shunned when these people find out he did it with poser. do you know why professional 3d animators despise poser? because while they slave away in $15000 programs that they spent years in school learning to use, and so they can call themselves 3D artists... hundreds of thousands of people around the world pick up this little program for a fraction of the cost and can also do similar work. now before i get trashed for saying that poser is just as good - i havent: im merely saying that poser has singlehandedly opened up the world of 3d animation and rendering to all of us. it has made it a form of 'hobby'. and look at the galleries. in the last year, so much has changed. people always pushing... pushing to get even better renders out of this program. well, poser 5 is not far off, and it will be even more powerful, bridging the gap some more and putting professional quality 3D animation in the hands of the hobbyist. so what do these people feel? fear. until now they were the elite. they still ARE, in a sense. but that gap is getting shorter and shorter every day. poser opened the door. i know hundreds of people who began their 3d career in poser, then moved on to modelling from there. theyre afraid because they see an ever increasing competitiveness in a field where they used to be secure. now, theyre not. thousands of people a month are stepping into 3d, starting with poser. heres a little analogy: imagine a neighborhood. joe lives in this neighborhood. he spends years of his life working away, saving up money, and he goes out and buys a ferrarri. suddenly joe is the talk of the neighborhood, the chicks dig him, everyone thinks hes such a cool guy, and his social life just went up a few notches. everyone wants to be friends with joe because he has such a cool car. joe feels great, on top of the world. (lmao, i know this doesnt happen like this but work with me, k?) a few weeks go by, and joe is revelling in his newfound success and fame. but one day hes driving down the street and he sees a ferrarri JUST LIKE HIS parked in a driveway. imagine his dismay. poor joe. then the next day he sees another. and another. theyre all over the place!!! suddenly joe is not so unique, not so special anymore. he wonders how this could be possible? he spent $200,000 on his ferrarri, and had to mortgage his house. how are so many people buying them? he talks to one of the other ferrarri ownders and finds out that its not REALLY a ferrarri. its a pontiac fiero kit car. it only cost the guy ten grand to build. imagine poor joe's dismay! it looks JUST like his ferrarri. sure, it doesnt have all the horsepower under the hood, or the great handling... but thats small consolation considering that the outside image is almost identical. so joe stomps back home in a rage. hes furious over whats happening. he spent a lot of money, and energy, on his image... and now hes no longer unique - everyone on the block looks the same. joe is depressed. joe hates these kit cars. he starts badmouthing them to everyone, saying that his is THE REAL THING, and the others are just cheap knockoffs that are completely worthless. everyone laughs at joe. joe goes from mr. popularity to being the laughing stock of the neighborhood for his constant outbursts and lunatic ranting. the end

Kiera ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 1:15 PM

Let people pigeonhole. You can use Poser for hundreds of things. Look at this forum.. some use Poser for theater set design.. others use it for animation. Still others use it for book covers, medical illustrations, and TV commercials. Pardon my French, but fuck 'em if they can't take a joke. I can imagine that if you come from a world where a low res piece of junk "human head model" costs three thousand bucks, it is a tad upsetting to see people spend 200 on Poser, 60 on Vicki, and render the shit out of her for awesome results in Lightwave or Cinema or whathaveyou.

c1rcle ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 1:40 PM

love the little story blackhearted, fits perfectly. In the past LW or 3DSmax we're the top & only the very best or richest could have them, come forward a few years and poser is biting them on the ass. you're right they are running scared cause they know very soon maybe not with version5 but soon poser is going to be the top, that's what scares them the most. they've spent so long sitting there secure in the knowledge they are the elite that when something comes along to steal their glory they freak out and have to trash it every opportunity they get. I just wish ppl would remember one thing it's not what tools you have ... it's HOW you use them! don't matter if you have Max, LW, TS, poser ... if you don't use them properly you get rubbish. it's not the tools that make the artwork it's the person using them. My dad is a professinal artist. His tools? a pack of Milliput, a few needle files and a craft knife. He has a whole wing of the London Firebrigade Museam dedicated to his work that he has done for them over the years.. do I look down on him for using primative tools? no. I look at his talent. He does the same for me. I personally cannot draw for shit. yet I can, as he puts it, work miracles on a computer. I am so fed up with with the attitude of 'it costs this much so it's the best. oh, your're using a cheap program? you must be crap' I'm a Truespacer and proud of it. I use Poser. I'm proud of it.

Since Gabe came up with a hypothetical story (and a dang good one), let me share a real-life one...my own. Ever since I could hold a crayon, I've loved to draw. I'd spend hours doodling whatever came into my head...from stick figures running races over crazy terrains (I could have come up with Lemmings before computers even became commonplace) to a 12 foot-long spacecraft drawn on butcher paper taped to my bedroom wall. But none of it was really GOOD. The practice faded, but the love of art remained...enter the computer age. I've taken up with freelance graphic artists, illustrators, sculptors, advertising artists, comic book artists, painters. All of them use a computer at some point in thier work. All of them use programs like Adobe Illustrator, 3D Studio, Maya, Animation Master...all the big-name stuff. The one thing most of them have in common: a copy of Poser gathering dust somewhere. That's how I got started with it; one of my friends gave me Poser 2, with the comment: "Take it, have fun. It's useless to me." Now I'm working with Poser 4. I show my work to some of those same artists, and get some really dirty looks. Why? Because I'm producing works equal or better to what they're doing, and doing it with software that costs, in some cases, a tenth of the cost of what they're using. And now? Well, I've done my first digital coloring job for a comic cover (Bubba the Redneck Werewolf), and my art...MY art...is being printed, on poster stock AND canvas, and being shown/sold at this year's GenCon in Milwaukee. I am an artist. Poser is one of my favorite brushes. And finally, thanks to Poser and the many wonderful artists who create FOR it, I feel my art is really GOOD. Pigeonhole if you like...but I'm here...and I'm coming up fast... My thanks to Blackhearted, Keira, Sturkwurk, Anton, and every other creator whose products add to my palette. I would not be where I am, and couldn't get where I'm going, without you. ChromeTiger PS: The attached image is one of my posters that will be available. I have an entire series planned, spanning several pantheons.

darkphoenix ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 6:18 PM

personally, I use 3ds Max, and quite well at that. But for those that discredit poser, i say that maybe they should actually try to USE the program. Anyone that has modelled and then skinned their model in Character Studio knows exactly what I am talking about. It simply is far superior for animating people in every way, I have never found anything that even comes CLOSE. The fact that the entire poser program itself is cheaper than many of the plugins you can buy for animation, and you are in an enirely new situation. i agree with blackhearted's statements that they are worried about security. Why pay someone 1200 to animate a scene when you can choose between 800000 people who will do it for far less with similar results? And then the real killer comes in ..... alot of the products you use with poser are FREE or exceptionally cheap. So literally hunreds of people can easily aquire high quality materials without having to buy them from you. Personally, i feel that poser is far behind the big name modelling and animation packages these artists use, but for what it does, nothing does it better, and poser is still likely to improve levels above that. Its quite posible when poser is in its 6th or 7th version it will be far closer to these animation packages for a much cheaper price. And can you imagine a POSER connection to Mental Ray? I love poser. I use poser. and I'm a Max artist (hangs head in shame)

Yet I could look at the materials and it looks almost pixel by pixel ....
