Ha, been there too B). Editing a pose is an entirely valid way of doing it, and its very useful to learn how. Then you can add things in like "scale" information, strip out "rotate" and "trans" info to create pure morph poses (so you can change a body shape without moving the figures pose). If your really adventurous you can even do things like Ajax`s "Easypose" technology.
