This is just Microsoft's way of "protecting" us from things we shouldn't need to know, incidently. I think it is another one of those Mac-envy things, Macs really don't care about extensions (they just know), so Microsoft said "Oh, we can do that too... Repete after me- "Curse you, Bill Gates!"
