Hi Ben, I think it was locked a bit too soon. The admonishions to go private to avoid embarrassment miss the point. If a virus SAYS it is coming from person A and a lot of us here correspond with person A: It does not matter if it is really coming from person A. The red flag is when you get an e-mail that SAYS it is from them and has an attachment - be careful! Telling person A in private, who is probably not the source, and except from being in someone's address book is not involved does no one any good. It is everyone else who needs to know. You don't blame the person being mimiced, but you need to know which disguise the mimic is using.

smerc ( ) posted Fri, 12 July 2002 at 4:13 PM

Virus, I believe the thread was locked because 1) The concern about a potentially harmful virus was made. 2) A method to check and eliminate the virus was made. Around the 70th message the post no longer became a here is a problem - here is a solution thread, but rather a you are an idot - no I am not an idiot discussion. Inappropriate name calling was also started. smerc

terminusnord ( ) posted Fri, 12 July 2002 at 4:38 PM

I feel that all threads started about virus warnings should be locked as soon as the admins notice them. They are usually false alarms, and even when they aren't they are rarely helpful to the majority of visitors anyways.

I come here to read about tips and techniques for improving my use of Poser. Period. I don't care if person A sent person B a virus. So what if it happened to come from someone else using this site..big deal...that still doesn't make it about using or learning Poser, and it doesn't make it of general interest to everyone here. Case in point: the thread you refer to affected how many people's computers? 1? 2? Not exactly an epidemic worthy of its own thread.

Do whatever you feel necessary to protect your computer from viruses, but please don't discuss it here as if it were on-topic.

This thread should be locked, or better yet deleted.

-Adam

I think it was a good call.. but that's just me.. got to the point where it all seemed a little pointless. DOlph.

bushi ( ) posted Fri, 12 July 2002 at 5:56 PM

This was originally an IM that Virus addressed to me since I was the moderator that locked the thread. My response was as follows: Good Afternoon, In my judgement, the thread had been reduced to discussing the thread rather then the topic and was headed for another round of personnal attacks. While having a thread go 'off topic' isn't a violation of the TOS, personnal attacks most definitely are a violation. There had already been too much 'bad blood' from earlier portions of the thread to let it start again. I hope this answers your question. If you'd like to discuss it further, feel free to send me a note or you may wish to contact a Renderosity administrator. Yours, bushi I made the judgement call based on two prior warnings on the thread and the tone of the posts just prior to locking.

Virus ( ) posted Fri, 12 July 2002 at 7:38 PM

bushi: Nope I just put this message minutes ago than the IM I sent you bushi,I had to IM because the delayed answer, but that's ok I understand that you must be busy, I just was curious about how that message "violates the TOS" I will not discuss the TOS aplication again, sincerly I'm tired of discussing the same tingh time after time. This is not the first time I've seen some inexperience of the people who run this site, too bad there is not more Complain and debate or Off topic forums, just one more thing with all my respect, because my previous experiences over this place to contact an administrator for me was always useless, so I will not going to lost my time trying to contact one. Adam's advise is a good one, keep always your antivirus software update, I wish Adam never got an informatic virus because that day he will understand how anoying could be the problem. I belive that if you are part of the community you are part of the whole thing, not just "poser" Sheez if someone can't come here asking for help not related to poser so what's the point to have a community? Jaager and smerc, you are right I think the original message suffered a distorssion, from a good advise and help call to something like it was, from my point of view it was a shame. Sincerly Virus

Virus, I hear ya, and I agree. I too feel strongly that the community is important and it's the best thing R'osity has got going for it. I would certainly not want to discourage anyone who's actually in trouble with a virus from seeking help here.

The trouble is though, it's not the people really asking for help that cause all the commotion. It's the people who get a virus--or even more lame are the people who just hear about a new virus--and then take it on like it's their own personal self-righteous duty to inform the online world that there is [yawn] yet another email worm.

Fact of the matter is, there is one of these new worms or viruses every few weeks, and pretty much anyone on any kind of message board or mailing list is sick-damn-near-to-death of virus "warnings". They are one of the biggest nuisances on otherwise high-quality services like renderosity. Often, the warnings are bogus and they sometimes even contain instructions for virus removal that will actually cause you to harm your machine if you follow them!

Most admins of really pro message boards try to keep signal-to-noise high by instantly eliminating any and all of the following:

  1. Virus Warnings

  2. Mac vs. Windows threads.

  3. Current events discussions (assuming they are off-topic for the forum in question). I had to kill over 200
9/11-related threads on my company's tech support boards. My experience as a moderator shows that people online will attempt to discuss anything, anywhere they can type into a field, even where it's 100% blatantly inappropriate.

  4. Pleas for help unrelated to the forum topic (e.g. please send money to my friend, please pray for my buddy in the hospital, etc..)

  5. Spam and advertisements, get rich schemes.

  6. Graphic porn, obscenities, vulgarities, racism, bigotry and everything else that serves only to offend.

So everybody.. how about that Poser! :-D

In my own opinion it would have been better just to let this whole issue lie, rather than to bring it up again. Bushi was right to finally lock the thread. Now what we need to do is cool off. Let time take care of things. I'm done here.

Dolphin ( ) posted Sat, 13 July 2002 at 3:07 AM

just a wee pointer here.. we do have an Off-Topic forum here.. pretty much specifically for uhh.. OT stuff.. not that I can claim to have loooked at it LOL .. anyhow.. point is.. I've been coming here for about six months now and right up until last week (ish) I didn't know a topic COULD be locked.. the whole community here has welcomed me full embrace even with my previous lack of any experience whatsoever with poser, they've helped me even when they've heard the question a thousand times before and there's absolutely no need for any of them to do that.. they owe me nothing and it's quite likely I could never pay them back for what they have all given me in tech advice and artistic help.. I just don't want to see this community split because of a few wild bad feelings flying about.. I think pretty much everone here is special in their own way and as human beings we deserve our opinions.. but sometimes it's easier to bite the bullet and nod the head than to rattle horns with your neighbour you know? or maybe I'm just a fruitloopL.. very possible :) Dolphy.

Sacred Rose ( ) posted Sat, 13 July 2002 at 3:30 AM

I'm not done ronknights. If it wasn't for your crap 99% of the posts that try and be helpful wouldn't be frelling locked. Now crawl back under your rock and ask your inane questions, so that you can copy the responses and release one of your new tutorials thus leaving normal people alone!!! You start crap with your bullshit insults and then have the gall to claim that you have been mortally wounded...well here's one for ya..... : GROW THE FUCK UP@!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh and by the way..nothing personal..your crap just pisses me off everytime u enter into any thread that has some 'normality' attached to it. Without a doubt after one post from you, it automatically becomes a personal attack, that was premeditated so you can run to an admin and cry foul... ain't life grand!!! oh, and yep I'm done here too. Thanks!! ps. Mods/ Admins.......feel free to lock it up and if necessary ban me...I'm totally tired of all the offall ronknights has to force feed & stuff down everyone's throats!!!

I should have clarified my post a little. I forgot that you need little words to absorb simple logic...so I will try and use words that I know you will be able to understand, or at least look up in a dictionary. {{{{GROW THE FUCK UP@!!!!!!!!!!!!!}}} because the world does not revolve around YOU ronknights. The world does not exist because of YOU. This website does not exist purely to serve you. This forum, and all forums like it, do not exist for YOU or because of YOU. Every post on this site and more specifically, this forum, is not created purely for YOU. YOU are NOT GOD!!!! I am not god, none of us are GOD, but then none of us act like the hipocritical,self-serving, indulgent, egotistical, narcissistic, arrogant, conceited, condescending, asinine creature that you proclaim yourself to be. Quite frankly, I am TOTALLY fed up with your attention-seeking, venomous actions and mostly your incessant childish post responses. BTW your little render and label is the epitome of your onscreen personification. Thank YOU so much for proving my point!

Swannie ( ) posted Sat, 13 July 2002 at 7:38 AM

On the other hand, dear Becka... what if he'd be totally sane and done all that? Then it would have been a real problem!!!

You wannna know something? I've never posted bull-ticky like you just posted. You obviously don't even care to know or recognize the facts. You're just out to have a temper tantrum. Well I ain't gonna waste any more time on you. Boohoo. Now do you feel slighted? "BTW your little render and label is the epitome of your onscreen personification. Thank YOU so much for proving my point!" You just don't get it. That image is the image I see in my mind of your childish behavior.

ok the pair of you. Please take this into PRIVATE where it belongs. I remind you both that this is an ART forum, not a place to attack each other. Kai

Sacred Rose ( ) posted Sat, 13 July 2002 at 9:58 AM

kai, with all due respect, I am NOT attacking him. I am simply voicing an opinion that is being felt and shared by many in this forum. What this member has been allowed to get 'away' with is a crime in itself. It is about time that the truth be heard, and the appropriate action be taken. There have been countless number of threads and complaints regarding this member for the past 18tmhs or so +!. These complaints I know have ranged from complete outrage to demands for his permanent banning due to continueous TOS Violations!! Yet he still remains, and his actions have not changed in any way. Should that action finally be enacted and also incorporate my banning from this web site...so be it. At least the site would be safer from the likes of him.

ronknights ( ) posted Sat, 13 July 2002 at 10:11 AM

Let's see this latest outburst follows a public accusation that a well-respected member of our community has a virus on her computer. caleb68 was proven wrong, and I knew he would. Now I'm being accused of a host of crimes including trolling. Gee, golly, gosh, but you know what, I think caleb68's entire thread was trolling and attacking without any substance or evidence. And, gee for that matter, so is this thread. Message671422.jpg

It appears to me that any discussion of the initial virus alert thread ends up in a aurgument. As such, anymore threads on this forum about that thread will be automatically locked. You can take it outside or to the OT forum. As for this thread, it's dead.
