Virus, I hear ya, and I agree. I too feel strongly that the community is important and it's the best thing R'osity has got going for it. I would certainly not want to discourage anyone who's actually in trouble with a virus from seeking help here.

The trouble is though, it's not the people really asking for help that cause all the commotion. It's the people who get a virus--or even more lame are the people who just hear about a new virus--and then take it on like it's their own personal self-righteous duty to inform the online world that there is [yawn] yet another email worm.

Fact of the matter is, there is one of these new worms or viruses every few weeks, and pretty much anyone on any kind of message board or mailing list is sick-damn-near-to-death of virus "warnings". They are one of the biggest nuisances on otherwise high-quality services like renderosity. Often, the warnings are bogus and they sometimes even contain instructions for virus removal that will actually cause you to harm your machine if you follow them!

Most admins of really pro message boards try to keep signal-to-noise high by instantly eliminating any and all of the following:

  1. Virus Warnings

  2. Mac vs. Windows threads.

  3. Current events discussions (assuming they are off-topic for the forum in question). I had to kill over 200
9/11-related threads on my company's tech support boards. My experience as a moderator shows that people online will attempt to discuss anything, anywhere they can type into a field, even where it's 100% blatantly inappropriate.

  4. Pleas for help unrelated to the forum topic (e.g. please send money to my friend, please pray for my buddy in the hospital, etc..)

  5. Spam and advertisements, get rich schemes.

  6. Graphic porn, obscenities, vulgarities, racism, bigotry and everything else that serves only to offend.

So everybody.. how about that Poser! :-D
