Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 21 6:06 am)
Glad I won't have to pay for the full version - that would be $700-$800 Canadian. Don't know if I'll be able to afford it even with the upgrade prices - eager to see what they are. I don't have pro-pack so I'm guessing the upgrade price for me would be around $350 US or more - still rather expensive in Canadian dollars. Looks like Poser 5 will be real step up from P4 when I do eventually get my hands on it.
The upgrade price is going to be the make-or-break for me. I can't spend $549 to upgrade poser, or even half that. IIRC, Poser 4 cost me something in the ballpark of $150-$200 when I got it from Meta. Anything more than that and I have to fold... I quite frankly cannot see many hobbiests paying $549 either. For those not using poser for profit, it would be a really expensive toy! Sure, a few people would get it, but most people will just feel like CL has screwed things up by over-enhancing Poser to the point where it can't be sold at hobbiest prices. Every other major 3D software is actually coming way down in price! As for the mac version coming late, that just sucks. It had better have the same price and upgrading structure as the win version though, or there will be a true uprising from the mac folks. -Adam
We have the greatest tool ever for telling stories and creating the best and most impressive art ever. It is worth every penny. With the Vue enhancement as well, the ability to create a low budget animated feature film just came within reach of the public. These tools are phenomenal! Cannot wait! Go CL!!! JG
How much is Poser 4 going for now (or at least before the announcement?) I'm going to say that the upgrade price will be at least $550 - that, which is probably going to put it at least $350, ne? Yowie. I could probably afford that, but I'm just not sure I want to bother. I upgraded to Poser 4 two years after it came out because it was difficult to make my story characters and their outfits in Poser 3. I'm pretty happy with the results I get from 4, a good chunk of the stuff features shown for Poser 5 I probably wouldn't use since I avoid photo-realism for most projects as a stylistic choice, and the simple fact is that I think the chance of my system effectively running it around much like those of a snowball's in hell. Even a hardware upgrade there would only help so much, since I'm still on Windows 98 and haven't found an acceptable OS upgrade. Well, to sum up my self-pitying whining, I just don't think it'll be worth it to me for a year or two at least. When the majority of the freestuff section won't work for me anymore.
chuckle @ Anthony Maybe Steve should have brought those 7 veils with him to Texas? Squares of silk and some fabric paint... we could round up some artists and for each area create a distinctive veil with a handy and clearly marked pull-away tab. You probably wouldn't want to allow punsters near the paintcans, though. Carolly
Um, people, point of order here... The $549 price quoted is NOT the UPGRADE - it's the Original Standalone for people who don't already have Poser 4 or the ProPack. Sheesh. If yer gonna worry about something, at least make sure you're worrying about the correct info. ;-) Kate (wondering why she feels like she's walked in on a game of "telephone")
Well, I feel for me, I will probably purchase the standalone because my version is from Metacreations and I don't to have to deal with any incorrections or complications. I'd rather start from scratch with Curious Labs. I may feel differently down the road. But I also feel that I may wait a while for people, like yourselves, to give it an overall review, and for perhaps their first patch or something.
Not that anyone cares, but like FyreSpiryt, I don't think I will be rushing to purchase Poser 5. As a hobbyist (who also unfortunately lives in Europe) it would be very hard for me to justify the expense. Unless the upgrade turns out to be $200 or less, I don't think I want to invest in it. The new Poser will include a lot of very exciting features, but I doubt I would really use them anyway. All I wanted was a better rendering engine. Kimberly

Today, Curious Labs announced that Poser 5 will be available for Windows users "in late summer 2002 with a suggested retail price of US $549." See attached link for Poser 5 announcement and partial features. :-) Unfortunately for us Mac users, "details about a Macintosh version will be announced later this summer." Guess we'll have to wait a bit longer. :-( Poser 2010 • Poser 8 • MacPro Desktop • Quad-Core Intel Xeon • 10 GB • Snow Leopard • Windows XPÂ
