Y'know, something similar just happened to me. It was a glowing material that set me back. With it in there, the render would stop saying "Collecting render data 51%" I took the glowing material out and it rendered just fine. Hmm, I did just install the 4.1 update. Wonder if it would have finished the render if I didn't have that.
