Here is an example of a L-System generated tree in Bryce. http://www.internettrash.com/users/anvilhead/g8.html Could have done a much better job with this of course. Just wanted to show what it can do. You can affect the formulas by changing numbers here and there and generate something different and original quite easily. This is a default file that comes with. A fairly large one. There are many different shapes, types and sizes. It is freeware. I opened the formula, told it to go, exported as dxf model, imported into Bryce, smoothed,(time consuming),ungrouped the two objects, textured them, (all 60,000+ polygons worth) then rendered. About 12 minutes@ 800x600. Hope I haven't strayed to far from the topic. I still vote Bryce.
