I used a tutorial from a magazine to learn the basic things in amapi. The tutorials that came with amapi suck, you won't get far when you use those. I find amapi easy to use myself, but a friend of mine finds it hard to get to grips with just like Phantast. I quess it's just a matter of taste. But it's freeware, so you don't have much to lose.
