Musicat, I suspect that "to be continued" refers to the traditional cliff-hanger ending of each part in a series. Cliff-hanger did not get that name from the famous scene in the Sherlock Holmes' canon, but rather from films. I've seen series of Cisco Kid, Buck Rogers, etc., spread out over weeks, and it is very effective. The image of our heros in peril lingers quite nicely. If you watch an entire series in an evening, it just seems over-acted. You don't even need peril. Sometimes anticipation is better. As an example, we have an image of Mr Wile E Coyote strapping on his new rocket skiis and holding a match to them... a "to be continued" sign here would work because we don't don't quite what is going to happen (will they blow up immediately? will he get over the cliff edge first? will they work, but take him underground instead? will they just fizzle and the match blows up?) but we know that whatever it is, it is going to result in one charred coyote blinking pathetically at us.
