When we talk about "true" bumpmapping, we are referring to bump maps that aren't simply desaturated versions of the texture.
For example, in Ki's head map, you will notice that the eyebrows are white (to show that it REALLY sticks up off the browbone). If we had just desaturated the texture, the eyebrows would be black, which would be wrong.
Another example is Ki's makeup map. There is a different bump map for the makeup map because eyshadow, etc, has TEXTURE. It's not just an airbrushed and hue saturated eyelid; eyeshadow is powdery and textured.
Anyhoo, that's what we mean. ;)
