Hmmm, that doesn't seem to do the trick. I should mention that the "Load Material" button has the usual display of Vue's built-in materials, and I've just discovered that new materials I've created or added will also display if I put them in the Materials folder at the top level, rather than in a sub-folder like I've been doing. (They show up when you select "Personal".) I suspect it's this preview mode that the material.prv file manages. This takes care of half my problem, but prevents me from organizing my materials the way I want to. What I'm actually refering to is the preview that's part of the "File" option, when you explicitly locate a file that isn't included in the Materials, or if you're looking for a bitmap, which doesn't have a selection dialog like the rest of the built-in functions. There's a little window in the lower left that is supposed to show the image, but all I get is trash. Interestingly enough, if I select a bitmap, the preview in the object's color pane shows just fine. It's just the file selection preview that's hosed.
