Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
I have the same problem. Other threads here have said that it's a Windows '98 program. The way '98 handles ram doesn't free up enough for Poser to do large renders. I'm hoping that Poser 5.0 has a better rendering engine. Others here have said that upgrading to XP will fix the problem. Daz says that a memory management utility should do the trick, but I have Memo boost and I still have trouble with rendering large images. I'll check out Poser 5 when it's available, if that doesn't solve the problem I will probably simply have to upgrade to XP, though I'm afraid of headaches.
I use to have the same problems until I upgraded to XP. Have not had a single lockup since then. Peggy

I have WinME and 512 megs of ram and I lock up on Vicky/Michael and decent sized textures for them. I have a feeling XP will fix my problem but... I'm scared to reformat my drive to install it. XP itself doesn't bother me, my sister's machine has it and it works fine. It's the install that freaks me out.
I used to have the same problem with win98se the only way I could get round it was by lowering the resolution of the textures, anything over 1000x1000 would crash poser, I've now got WinXP & just to test it I increased the resolution of a texture to 5000x5000 & it didn't even blink :) Chailynne if you've got the room on your harddrive you could dual boot WinME & WinXP. The problem is definitely due to Win 98. It doesn't have sufficiently robust memory, process and thread handling to cope with the huge demands Poser makes on your system. Temporary solution: 1. Use texs at lower res 2. Don't use bump maps. 3. If you have to have several mil filgures at once, obj them out to body morphs and throw away all the other morphs you don't have to have for the scene. I installed Win2K, not a hang since then. I got them every day when I had '98. Oh, by the way - if you get a hang, always reboot the machine to clear it out - just restarting Poser is not enough. :] FishNose
Hard drive space is the least of my worries. I have a 40 gig main drive with 14 gigs free. Will be a lot more if I reformat, I won't reinstall everything on that drive. And my secondary is 80 gig with 30 gig free. LOL That's my poser drive. Guess I need to do more research on installing XP so it doesn't scare me so much. I really would like to use higher res textures and more figures in my renders.
