Don't count the drive out yet. I've had machines give that message then wake up a few tries later. One machine I know gave that message on and off for months before the people finally got around to replacing the drive. They didn't lose a thing. You might look around for a few local pc repair places. One may be able to replace the drive and save the data at the same time.
