Yes it is analogous. It is perfectly legal to record a show on a VCR, or whatever, for your personal use. It is not legal to distribute that no matter the reason. I feel sorry for the guy that will lose the ability to legally watch his show because it is no longer carried by a station in his area. But it isn't legal to send him a copy.
