Subject: Poser 5 for Mac...?

Has anybody heard any rumours? Or would anyone care to speculate on when they may be releasing Poser 5 for the MAC OS X operating system? I'm worried that they may not even bother to realease a Mac version!

why would they cut out a big chunk of their customer base?

Could depend on what DAZ do, and if they do, well, last one with a MAC version is a ...

CL has been saying all along that they were going to do a Mac version that will run on Mac OS X and Mac OS 9. The current announcement is that they expect to announce "soon" when it will be available. They've been saying that for quite a while now, so "soon" is clearly a fairly relative and unbounded time. Still, they at least have basically good intentions. They've passed out some suggestions that they don't have programmers familiar with Carbon interfaces (which are slightly different from the old OS 9 toolbox) and that they were having some difficulties with their porting efforts. (With no details, it's hard to know how to take that.) A month ago, remember, (or at least I do), that the Windows people were expressing the same concerns about the Windows version. CL kept saying "soon", and "trust me", and at that point the CL web site hadn't even been updated in over a year. Clearly CL has been going through some difficult times. What they're trying to accomplish is ambitious in the first place. They've got lots of Windows version bugs to find and fix, and I won't mind at all having them finish that before they release the Mac version. (It's bad enough we have to wait: but I'd hate to have to wait and then go through all the same initial problems the Windows guys had because CL did the Mac port before fixing them.) So just hang on a bit, and we'll see what happens.

Curious Labs can use a big cash infusion right now, but it's a bad time economics-wise. Hi-tech investment is flat (or still dropping) in that area. If there's no Mac version, it's understandable. The amount of profit associated with Mac sales (about 4% of total) is probably not even enough to pay the programmers in India or Israel, so where are they going to get the money and how are they going to justify the expense? I just don't see it, frankly. They're on a shoestring budget as it is. It's the same thing that happened with UVMapper Pro. They did the math and the numbers weren't good enough to proceed with a Mac version, then OSX came along and made everything 10 times harder for them.

The thing is that the 4 percent isn't a fair representation. I am guessing 75 percent of the Mac users at least are somehow graphics oriented whereas a much smaller percentage of the PC market is graphics oriented. Yes there are a lot of graphics done with PC's but percentage wise it isn't comparable. That being said I am still waiting :)

Patience is a virtue that all Mac users know :-)

True enough, but this forum has become a little bit of a visit to another planet. Standing on the sidelines listening to Windows users either complain about bugs, or talk about work-arounds. Hard to participate, learn or care frankly.

Waiting...waiting...

My understanding about UVMapper Pro for Mac is that the delay had little or nothing to do with market conditions or lack of credit-card-waving consumers. Steve Cox isn't a phalanx of programmers. He is one very talented hard-working man who just happened to become a father for what I believe is the first time this summer. As much as I want and need this program, I do not begrudge him the time to help his wife or become acquainted with his newborn. A couple of months now could make a life-long difference later, whereas software is just software. (I'm a developer... and I'll NEVER burn out again.) Which reminds me, it's been a while since we've exchanged emails; I should see how they are doing. In any case, the percentages you rely upon might be close for the entire computer-using base, but are not within a mile of the ballpark when it comes to the creative professions. Carolly

CL say they will announce a Mac version soon, but then they said for 3 yrs that a version5 was coming, so a few more months shouldn't be that long to wait. Did I miss that announcement Carolly? Congrats to the Coopers :) Now the important question did you pass out when the baby arrived Steve? Rob

Daio ( ) posted Wed, 18 September 2002 at 10:17 AM

I have an IM from Kupa dated 9/6 saying that the Mac version is definitely in the works and that they hope to make some annoucements later this fall. :-)

"The amount of profit associated with Mac sales (about 4% of total)..." The 4 pecent figure came from where? Are you projecting Apple's market share onto the number of Poser users? If so, that's bad statistics. The slim Mac figures tossed around so easily are hugely skewed by the fact that globally, most businesses use PCs. Think of it: millions of offices all over the world equipped with PCs. But how many of them have Poser installed? Or Photoshop? I'd like to see the stats on home useres and hobbyists. I'll bet that would even things out a tad. There was a poll here on R'osity a while back and if I'm not mistaken, about 30-40 percent of the Poser users who responded were Mac users. I'd be interested in kupa's response as to what percentage of their sales of P4 were Mac versions, if he can give that kind of info. And, while I'm a devoted Mac man, I'm also a cross-platform user and I have to say that PCs are definitely beginning to take a place in the graphics arena. For me, it's the platform I don't like, not the machine. That's a distinction I see few people make (except Penguin fans). My machine at work (a PC) has crashed on me precisely once in the last year. Don't ask me to count how many times I've crashed my Mac in the last month. But I f***ing hate using Windows and I hate supporting Microsoft's corporate policies and strategies. End of rant.

xvcoffee ( ) posted Wed, 18 September 2002 at 4:44 PM

Hiram I estimate that 1 person in 8 is a Mac user. I get around, those stats are fairly consistent. Daio If they could tell us the EXACT status of the Mac version, is it in pieces on the floor, or is it complete except for that code thing? (Whos next?) c1rcle We all thought you were joking when you put that, i mean its Steve COOPER not Steve Cox whos working on all the patches and upgrades, and the Mac version. I though I saw a wee bit of cleverness there. (Btw Thorneworks is back up, sort of)

I wish I had been, it's just me making a total twat of myself as always ;) I was skimming & saw the words Steve & baby & jumped straight in. hehehe :) Rob

There are not too many Steves. Really. Until the conversation comes around to programming and nifty tricks to make educated cat litter out-perform the stuff in the etch-a-sketch box. Steve and Karen Cooper both work for Curious Labs, the developer of Poser 5. They already have 2 kids, one of whom wants to be an artist, the other does origami which involves thinking in 3D. By the time they are adults, who knows how we'll be making art? I wasn't talking about them. My opening sentence referred to UVMAPPER PRO. My change of title should have been an alert that I was directly addressing mateo's off-the-cuff statement that Mac porting of UVMP was dropped because "they did the math". There is no "they". Steve Cox is one man. The Coxes should be parents by now. All clear? Carolly

yep totally thanks Carolly :)
