THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Bryce 4 book recommendations?

headgamer ( ) posted Thu, 23 March 2000 at 11:54 AM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 4:35 PM

Hey all, I am somewhat familiar with Bryce and 3d design, but I would like to be able to delve deeper into it. Can anyone recommend a good book at the intermediate-to-advanced level for Bryce 4? Much appreciated, headgamer...

the manual is the best thing u could use, unless your using a pirated copy of B4, in which case u won't have one.

headgamer ( ) posted Thu, 23 March 2000 at 4:10 PM

The manual is fine, but I have always preferred 3rd party books. Manuals always seem like "Here's the features. Enjoy." The thing I like about 3rd party books is that they go into some of the nuances and tricks that I don't feel the manuals go into. I see them as a good supplement to the manuals. Thanks anyway. Maybe someone else has some recommendations? If not, I'll just go out on a limb and pick one myself... HG...

I don't know of many books, but Susan Kitchens has a great book for Bryce 2 and one coming out for Bryce 4. At least that's what I've heard... I don't know her website url though... Gecko

The only book I've heard about is the Susan Kitchens one. If, indeed, she is coming out with a book for Bryce 4, I'd wait for that one. The best option now is all the great Bryce web resources that are out there. There's a goldmine of info out there, if you look. -sk

There should be a book called Real World Bryce. That may be the Kitchen's one, though if you have Bryce 4, you'll have to wait until she gets that version out. There's also a tips and tricks download on the metacreations sight in Bryce goodies, if you have stuffit to decompress it.

I have Bryce 4 FX by R. Shamms Mortier( also authur of Poser books)I got it at Borders books for about $50.00 US. It's pretty good and comes with a content CD with some textures and models -n-stuff Models are kinda cheesy (but better than I can do at this time ) I like the book Hope this helps Hawkfyr

Susan Kitchens book was supposed to be out in Jan., I think, then it was moved up yet again. I have Real World Bryce 2 and I sure would like the version for 4. Its very very good. Here is her URL http://www.auntialias.com/home.shtml

As it happens I emailed Peachtree about real World Bryce 4 a week or so ago. I just rec'd a reply advising that the release date has been moved up to June 2000. I'm getting frustrated with the continual delays and have no idea what is causing the hold-up. However, based upon the version 2 book I'm inclined to wait. Ms. Kitchens (spelling?) did a wonderful job with it and I like to think the delay is simply that she wants to do equally well with this new edition. Coriolis has a book out called Bryce 4 f/x and design. It's not too bad I suppose but it is probably best suited to one who has very little experience with Bryce. Overall, I found Ms. Kitchens book much more useful- even if it is two versions out of date.

I agree Jval..it pretty much just explains a few techniques. with lighting and texturing. but I like to have it for reference. I would still like tio get Susans book when it comes out I tend to get most of the best stuff from users like all of us here and across the web from tutorials -n- stuff. Hawkfyr

I have the Bryce 4 manual, it sucks I think no details. I still don't know what a lattice is! The manual says really nothing about them and H2 is keeping them a secret. I was on the Barnes and Noble site earlier this week and it listed the Susan Kithcens book as coming out next week. Who knows, that date moves around more than my beer belly! I think that would be the one to wait for though. I got her book for Bryce 2 (and lost it and never used Bryce 2, since my computer was too slow at the time), but I do remember liking the book. The book by Morter (sp?) for Bryce 4 I checked out and didn't care for, too entry level I thought. Dave

Dave, try using the greyscale images from H2 to create that Fendi bottle. That gives you a good idea of what's possible with it. There really isn't anything much to know about them--they work just like a terrain--basically a bump map I guess, but the lattice gives you a double dose of the greyscale--its like a clamshell sort of--when you create the one side, you get the other also. I'll post a simple one above. Diane

Tidalwdave I really have no secrets. If you scroll down you will see that we have had some lenghtly discussions on lattices, and I even uploaded some greyscales for you to try. Picnic is right, if you know terrains you also know about lattices. Regards H2

H2, just giving you a hard time, I really was just kidding and really giving the Bryce book a hard time. Thanks for the response though. When are you coming to Florida so I can show you the fishing spots? I'm going out Saturday, can you make it? There are suppose to be alot of snook and reds out! Hope it isn't wendy though, that's been keeping me in the past few weeks. I only have a 16 foot boat! I think you need a vacation!

Harrison2 ( ) posted Thu, 23 March 2000 at 9:37 PM

Wow,sailing and fishing in Florida, now that's my kind of vacation.....perhaps a little Brycing too.Be careful, I just might take you up on that........H2

tidalwdave ( ) posted Thu, 23 March 2000 at 9:42 PM

H2, whenever you are ready (seriously). Any fisherman is a friend of mine, I won't even bother you for any Bryce secrets. I looked at your greyscale images and I'm still in the dark. I'll figure it out though, give me time. I'm alittle slower then most. Fish on, Dave

Harrison2 ( ) posted Thu, 23 March 2000 at 9:52 PM

Tidalwdave.."slower than most"......I'll say this for the last time, I have no secrets, ha ha. Have you ever fished for Atlantic Salmon with a 4 weight rod and 4 pound tippet, and a tiny #12 fly? Almost as good as Brycing. H2

tidalwdave ( ) posted Thu, 23 March 2000 at 10:01 PM

I'd hope it better than Brycing! Being as I'm slower than most, I have never fly fished. Give me a big fat shrimp, greenback, shinner, or a nice jig, and I'm happy! What can I say, I'm a simple man. I'll post some pics of all the fish I catch this weekend just to make you jealous, just make sure you make up some good lattice fish pics, I look forward to those! Oops, bedtime, happy weekend all, it's Friday in 45 minutes!

Harrison2 ( ) posted Thu, 23 March 2000 at 10:31 PM

Headgamer I really must apologize for taking over your post with all this fish talk. Got carried away. H2

headgamer ( ) posted Thu, 23 March 2000 at 11:17 PM

H2... No prob.... I got the impression I should just wait till Susan's book comes out... Will probably getthe carrara Bible, Susan's Bryce book, and a good Poser 4 book all at once this summer... HG...
