must be a stupid question but i need your help to map a model of a lamp-shade (unfoldind) on a cone.with UV map & Carrara. Do you see an other solution than throw all out of the window !!

Thanks JJ ;)

This may be off base but have you simply tried to wrap a tif file of the texture map in the color channel using cylinder mapping? memaci

Memaci beat to the punch on this one. There are several projection types you can use. I would give those a spin before you chucked anything. Let us know how it turns out! -Kix

In UVMapper, select all, make a new map using cylindrical cap. You should get a map like the top map. Then select just the cone part and make a new map for that part using planar and don't split it. It should look like the bottom map. I did this with the cone in UVMapper.

Yes,wyrwulf, but ...!!!!

Can someone else help out here? This problem has to do with the way the OBJ is built, I think. I don't have enough experience with Carrara to be of any more help.

Wow, this one a real brain teaser !!! I couldn't get any solution to work efficiently with UVmapping ... Though i will make some other tries . I'd be curious to know how other softs would do this ... But there is a simple solution that works in every case when you don't want any distortion : procedural shaders ! You can get some very complicated patterns this way, like on the pic i show, but if you really have to use a texture-map, then you're out :( litst

I don't know if you're still looking or not, but I found this neat little program that does exactly what you're looking for. It takes a cone, lampshade, or whatever and unfolds it flat. No distortion, whatsoever.
