Subject: P5 still dead in the water after patch

Hiya, I too am looking for constructive ideas.. ;) I have already emailed CL (twice after tonite), but was wondering if anyone else is having this problem. I'm running a P3-450, 384MB, 10GB HD, ATI Rage Fury 32MB on Win98SE - and haven't been able to run P5 once. I get the BSOD every time I try to start it up. No splash screen, nothing. I have tried installing Cacheman after some help from another list member, but no dice. I emailed CL immediately but they were obviously swamped so I waited to see if the patch would help. I installed the full patch tonite, but it still doesn't work. Is anyone else having these problems? I can run several other 3D apps (incl. P4 and LW) without incident. It seems as if P5 is trying to grab more resources than are available, but that's only a guess at this time. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Bonzai Gopher

Do you have any virus-checking software running? You might want to turn that off, as well as any other software running in the background. Also, you might want to check out the previous posts about the patch causing a BSOD. Admittedly, it sounds like your problem is different, since you were having it before. But it's worth a try. One more thing you might want to try -- if you don't have recent drivers for your video card, you may want to update them. Sometimes that helps with software crashing (maybe even with software crashing your OS). I'm trying to think if there's anything else that I can remember from my days as tech support, but I can't think of anything. Oh -- remember when you send e-mail to tech support to tell them about things like software that runs in the background on your system. They'll be trying to figure out what's (hopefully) unusual about your system that's causing a crash. Good luck! Auralia

Thanks! I've got a firewall in place, and Mcafee anti-virus going (now Cacheman too). Could USB devices be causing problems? I'm off to check the video drivers... ;)

You're welcome. :) I really like Poser 5, so it's tough hearing about people who can't run it. :( Definitely try turning off the anti-virus software. By nature, anti-virus software is pretty intrusive. I've heard of it causing problems with software before. Even if Poser does work without it running, I don't know if keeping the virus software off is a good permanent solution for you, but it would at least pinpoint the conflict. Firewall software could also potentially be a problem. You're running all the potential problem apps on your system! ;) I have no idea about USB devices. :) Maybe someone else would know about that... And good luck again! Auralia

Hi Anthony, Yes, I've tried the drivers but no dice. I downloaded the one set and they still gave the BSOD with the "Fatal Exception 06 ..." message. When I tried the older version sent by CL Tech support, it didn't BSOD, but it did hang the PC (the variety was nice, at least). I sent more detail in my response to the email from tech support. Thanks for the help - I'm running out of ideas here... I've disabled USB devices, turned off my anti-virus and firewall - I've never had a program do this before. I guess my timetable for a system upgrade is going to have to be moved up.... ;) If there's any more info you need, just yell! :) Bonzai Gopher
