Subject: Mec4D Site ... Mario Head Texture ... Frontpage & Mac Incompatibility

Basis3D ( ) posted Sun, 06 October 2002 at 11:04 AM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 5:30 AM

Although the Mario Head Texture is listed as being "PC/Mac" it is unaccessible to me because the site was constructed using Frontpage and I'm on a Mac. I wish more people realized that Frontpage sites typically don't work on Macs. Microsoft has put alot of stupid stuff into Frontpage that Macs can't handle. The site crashes in Netscape on the Mac. Doesn't crash Explorer on the Mac but none of the Mec4D's links work. Just a word to the wise in case you're constructing Web sites using Frontpage and still want Mac users to be able to access them.

I'm a PC user, and I still hate frontpage ;) . I never knew that it didn't work with Frontpage though.....I hate M$ even more now. Heh.

Err....That SHOULD read, "I never knew macs didn't work with Frontage though....."

dkal, I get the same Netscape and IE results on my Mac. It's a shame, because I love Catharina's products. Didn't realize it was due to Frontpage. I used it once and found it quite rudely changed things I had coded myself, so never used it again.

I am sorry for you but our moderator Smakintosh use well Mac and she have never any problems with the website, not with links and not with download. The Galleries are created as PHP script and not Frontpage. If you post your message in our forum maybe she will tell us the secret why she can well view all. I can change the menu html as well so maybe this will works for you.. I will see what I can do but next time if you don't tell me your problem on my forum or just write to me.. how I can help you then?

As I understand it, Emperor Gates has decided that Micros... will no longer necessarilly use industry-standard/Sun JAVA. That's probably why my Mac chokes on more and more web sites.

" As I understand it, Emperor Gates has decided that Micros... will no longer necessarilly use industry-standard/Sun JAVA. That's probably why my Mac chokes on more and more web sites." Yes, that's it in a nutshell. Simply, don't use Frontpage to create Web sites if you wants Macs to also be able to view your Website. Das it! End of story, guys! Sorry if it seems harsh to you! :-)

Frontpage is an EXTREMELY STUPID program that just doesn't care about Macs or even other versions of Windows. I DID write to you directly and I also wrote a general message on the Renderosity forum. There's really no solution other than to reconstruct your Web site in Dreamweaver. Frontpage just SUCKS ... royally! Frontpage doesn't work with MANY different OS's. Sorry for the stark revelation. I wish more people realized this before they started to waste their time trying to create Web sites using Frontpage. :-)

By the way, you (Catherina) suggested that I post a message in your site's forum about this problem. Now, HOW am I supposed to do that since your links do NOT work??? I am NOT ABLE to post a message in your forum due to the Microsoft Frontpage front-end. DOH! :-0 Best regards for a successful cross-platform site ... someday!

I've been using Frontpage for the last two years and have never had anyone complain about my websites. And for the record, I don't hate Bill Gates. Tall poppy syndrome doesn't exist in this house.

Basis3D ( ) posted Mon, 07 October 2002 at 12:42 AM

Xena, For the record, I don't really hate Gates either. That's not the point. As "mikes" pointed out, it's well known that Gates went against the ruling of the World Wide Consortium and created his own non-standard form of JAVA even though the W3C voted to use the Sun JAVA standard. This non-standard form of JAVA is indeed deeply embedded in Microsoft Frontpage. If you haven't been getting any complaints from Mac users it's probably because they can't reach you because your sites' Contact links just don't work. Either that or you've just somehow been lucky. But I doubt that. I'm not saying it's impossible to make a Frontpage site that works on a Mac but I think you'd have to know what features to avoid using in Frontpage. Unfortunately, I doubt that most Web developers using Frontpage know what to avoid and therefore the sites usually break on Macs. If you don't mind, send me some links to the sites that you've created or publish them here in this message thread. I'll let you know if they work or not on a Mac. :-)

I do my site entirely in FrontPage (except for the blogger page), so you can check it out if you like. The only things I use from FrontPage are the navigation links and page banners. The rest I do manually with the option selected to leave the code as is so that FP doesn't reformat it. You're welcome to take a look and see if you have any problems with it. I know several Mac users who visit my site regularly and have not mentioned having any problems with it. -darlisa

Basis3D ( ) posted Mon, 07 October 2002 at 1:48 AM

darlisa, You obviously have a very "clean" site. No clue that it was even created in FrontPage. No tags like this in the head ... "meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage Express" Your navigation links and page banners work fine. Guess what doesn't work ... the blogger pages! Clicking on any of them gives me the following ... "Sorry,an unexpected error has occured. The URL you are looking for may require a trailing slash (/) at the end, like http://www.servername.com/foldername/. If this does not work, plese contact the hostmaster. Berkus" Except for the blogger problems, I have to think that by keeping your site very simple and very clean you've made it accessible to me on my Mac. That's usually not the case when I come across a site constructed in FrontPage. Usually there's too much nonsense going on with sounds and animations and rollover menus, etc., and the site just breaks or crashes my browser. Like I said, I crash when trying to access the Mec4D site using Netscape. Explorer doesn't crash but there is no possible way to download the Mario Head Texture (which looks great by the way, Catherina). Nothing happens when I click. "gryffnn" says he/she has the same experience. When I have problems like this I always try to check the page source and 9 times out of 10 I find the site was created in Frontpage. Loved your Steph the Orc!!! Great stuff. Best regards. :-)

Don't confuse Java and JavaScript, it's different technologies from different companies. The only thing they have in common is the mess Microsoft have made with both standards. The internet client side version of Java is Applets, which is as good as dead, killed of by Flash.

"Where does a 2000 lb gorilla sit? Anywhere he likes." Uncle Bill has such a large market share, he can do what he wants. I'm not saying it's right, just reality. Actually, the problem tends to be programmers who don't or won't test for other platforms, and web designers who think a lot of flash increases their site content. Turn off the music, cut down on the scripting, and what you do use, make it simpler. Test it. Please. I love Catherine's work, and buy every Mike product she makes as soon as I see it for sale, but the site is confusing, loud, and not easy to navigate. Too many bells and whistles. Too much distraction. I go there to see what she has for sale and to check out freebies, not to play games. I'd much rather visit a clean site like Curio's than something that flashes every time I move the cursor. P.S. Catherine, when is the new Mike texture going to be done? I love the previews. And thanks for the free heads for Leonardo! Gosh, that's one great texture, and the heads make it VERY versitle. Best idea I've seen for sale in a long time.

Hmmn I am on a Mac using OS 9.2.1. It seems that I find glitches with Mec4D-but was somehow able to work through and get the textures. I used IE 5.1. I do recall getting Java errors though. I dont think the direct link from the Forum worked-I seem to remember going directly to the site and searching until I found the textures- in Catharina's gallery I believe. Keep trying-they are WORTH the effort! Eric Walters

dkal, thanks for taking a look, glad you like the Steph Orc pics. Those are some of my faves. I've deliberately kept the site as clean as I can, although I am aware of some confusion from folks who enter the main site, but that I haven't figured out how to alleviate yet. The blogger archives are another problem altogether as that page is generated by blogger and they haven't figured out yet why the archives are being saved into the right directory but the generated links are wrong. -darlisa

But then I've always had trouble with Catharina's sites, even back to the modeling days. They tend to be a bit heavy on the bells and whistles. I seldom bother to give feedback on site performance to anyone these days because the attitude is usually something along the lines of "get a PC." Not a dig specifically at you C., but I for one don't need all the flash. Your content is great, I just wish it were more accessible. I reluctantly gave up using Netscape because I had to if I wanted to get anywhere. Bill is winning this battle, guys.

Charlie_Tuna ( ) posted Mon, 07 October 2002 at 10:02 PM

Hiram, I found several sites that were 'netscape hostile' when I was using 4.7 but haven't found one yet that don't like 7 maybe it's time to update? :-)

Why shouldn't speech be free? Very little of it is worth anything.

Hiram ( ) posted Tue, 08 October 2002 at 8:00 AM

You know, I tried 6, but it was so slow jerky and buggy that it totally turned me off. I may try 7, but I'm awfully wary.
