Subject: DAZ Mil Dragon Texs. BUM Q

Trying to load DAZ's MAT Pose Texs., for the Mil. Dragon, I noticed all of the installed images are in JPG format. Poser wo'nt load these. It keeps looking for BUM files. I do'nt really understand why the BUM files were'nt installed, but none the less I've decided to convert them myself. My problem is how to do that. I loaded the MilDragonBodyB.jpg into photoshop, and then clicked File>Save As...but there was no option for .BUM! How do you convert? = )

The conversion process needs to be done inside of Poser itself. The way to do this is to go to your Render:Materials pull down menu. Then, to the bottom-left, you will see a field that says: Bump Map. Click where it says "load" and then browse for the JPEG that you want to convert. Select it and hit "OK", Poser will bring up a message asking you if you want to convert it, hit "YES". and then you're all set. This only has to be done once for each file. The reason the files weren't included as BUM's already, is due to the enormous file size and poor compression inherent to BUM files. Hope this isn't too much of a headache for you. Anthony Applegate also has an image editor in freestuff here that can convert to and from BUM files.

I see...I just reformetted that .jpg to .bmp, renamed it .bum, then took note of the file size's increase 21 times over! It went from 1.5MB to 31MB! I wonder how Poser works with such large texs.? OK, Assuming the DAZ Millenium Dragon Textures installed to Runtim>Libraries>Poses>MAT Millenium Dragon P4, where I think I'm working from...How am I to know which body part should be selected when loading and converting a JPG. I'm trying to load the All Map Blue. I'm was hoping it was a Tex. to cover the full surface of the mesh in blue, but after closer inspection, it does'nt seem to. Which texs go to which parts, and which are necessary to cover the whole body with a skin? I'm trying this tex out for the first time to show see it through the Coloration job I've done with the mesh, and my Camera angles, for the DAZ Medevil Contest! = ) = )

It doesn't matter which body part/group you have selected when you load the JPEG's as bump maps to convert them. I would just go through and convert every such JPEG. Then I would restart poser to clear out your textures completely and then just work from there, the bum's will be automatically loaded as needed, and not any others. Using the MAT files included with the Dragon will help you to make sure you have every file loaded that is necessary. I don't know those off hand myself. If you need more details on which maps go where, email our tech support for further details: tech@daz3d.com Good luck!, Steve Kondris DAZ Productions, Inc.

I just left the Body Skin option on and selected the file. It asked me if I wanted to convert, I clicked yes, and then OK to get out of Render >Materials. But then when I double clicked on All Map Blue again, it still got a Please Locate Missing File MilDragonBodyB.bum window. = )

Hey just open Poser. When your default person is in place convert all of the jpgs that need to be bums by going into the material editor and in the slot for bum files load them. Poser will convert them. Then open the dragon. If you need a screen shot let me know. Ron

Thanks but some stuff wont work it keeps asking for bums

BUM files are just .bmp files with an embossing function fun on them. You can load the .jpgs into photoshop, run the emboss filter and save as a greyscale .bmp. Then just rename the extension as .bum using the windows explorer.

Attached Link: CorrectReference

JohnnyDS, you can either open the cr2/pz2 files and change all .bum refs to .jpg or run CorrectReference on your files to fix them automatically.

William, I don't think that's quite right. As far as I know bums aren't greyscale. the Red color channel and green color channel are used but don't always have the same value. the blue channel always appears to be 0.(??) - TJ
