I would like to know what you think about our patch. Do you think it fixes important issues ? What would you like to see in the following patch ? I would like to make sure we address the things that are most important to you first.
Thanks for your input.
Charles

Even if i don't have a lot of stability issues, they're the most important to me . The soft must be reliable . And you've done great work on this in the patch ( and overall since Carrara 1) :) So if there's still problems on the reliability side, that's what i'd like to see fixed first . litst

i agree with litst. stability is most important. but i was also glad to see that you improved rendering speeds with osx. -scott

Looking at the bug list for the patch I would have to say you all did a great job! I applaud all of the hard work you have done going from 1.0 to 2.1! For me, unfortunately you fixed a lot that I did not know was broken and little of what I personally use. I have not seen any difference with the patch, the one file that would not open, still does not open (sent in to eovia, though I don't know if the patch prevents the error in saving to occur in the first place so it may be fixed. Inability to render image until the file is saved and reopened, even after the patch happened once With one file, nothing special seems to trigger it, just render, change something, render, change something, etc and eventually after 10-15 it will no longer render until the file is saved, closed and reopened. SM, all dots still black, even the selected one. VM, well, until it is as functional (extrude, sweep, use quads, box model) as amapi it is a weakness, unfortunately Amapi 5 has some serious stability issues (and no car exp and no integration with Carrara). I was hoping that the VM would also get updated so that I would not have to enter 0 every time I wanted to extrude (should be free by default with a shortcut key) Copying a terrain and then pasting it and trying to move it results in an error until it is taken into the edit room, then it works fine subsequently. Open GL using a 32MB ATI All-in-wonder Pro is still to buggy to use (Artifact, layout changes, occasional rendering failed) I am happy to see the Booleans improved in the VM, great! All in all I am happy to see progress in functionality and stability for all platforms. As my skills improve I am sure to appreciate the fixes just implemented. Great job and keep it coming!

Thanks for the info. I would recommend fixing this bug first as it makes Carrara2 completley useless if you rely on switching to other apps while you work. As stated on the C2 Patch page: OsX: the system clock is displayed over the minimize button after the first switch to another application However this is not fixed. Launch C2, switch to an app, switch back to C2 and mr. buggy is still there with a twist. The added twist is that instead of only covering the minimize button, it leaves the OSX menu bar, with only the time menu, covering the whole C2 menu bar. Also the dock does not go away and you are forced to hit Command Q to quit C2. Major Bug. -Paul

I forgot to add that I am running C2 2.0.0.21 (Patched) and OS X 10.2. 1GB Ram, PowerMac G4 dual 450, ATI Rage 128 Pro (soon to be Radeon 9000 Pro). -Paul

I am surprised about the problem on MacOsX. How do you switch between apps ? (Cmd+Tab ? or Dock ? ) It might be a problem with 10.2 since we did not get to test Carrara on 10.2 yet... Charles

I just installed the Windows patch... still can't render a scene that was built in C1.1. I made no changes to the scene what so ever... it's the original C1 car file. The scene would render fine in C1.1. The program just locks up.. never even starts to render. Can't abort the render or anything. I have to use the task manager to kill C2. I sent an email about it but never got a response. My system is an 800 Athlon, 768Mb, Win XP Pro. Actually now that I think of it, I haven't got much of anything to work in C2 that was built in C1.1 I really wish I had put the money I spent on C2 towards upgrading Cimena. Ed

Can't spell.. that's supposed to be Cinema Ed

Hi, could you send us your file so that we can fix the problem ? We are working on a second patch that should be released soon. We will try to fix every crash that will be reported to us if we can reproduce it. We released this patch early so that people can benefit right new from what we already fixed so we did not have time to fix everything that was reported to us so far. Don't give up on Carrara. We are working hard to make sure you have the best experience with it. Please email me directly at: charles@eovia.com Charles

Mac OS 10.2 is still very buggy, and the first bug fix (10.2.1) was released last week. Anyone who has worked with Apple or 3D products is accustomed to buggy software, so don't worry about us giving up. As a programmer, you always have to compromise between releasing a product in a timely manner vs. endless delays until it's "perfect". I did notice that the bug involving GI and transparency (mentioned in the Poser thread below) wasn't one of the bug fixes listed for this first patch.

I Still can't render quicktime movies with alpha Channels. That part is not working... I'm using Mac OS X

PAGZone ( ) posted Mon, 02 September 2002 at 12:11 AM

Mateo, OS 10.2.1 was not released to the public yet. A pre-release build was seeded to some developers though. Be sure thought that this is a Carrara bug and not an OS X bug. If it was an OS X bug, then Eovia would have had nothing to fix. As for how I switch, pick your method, it will still reproduce the bug. CMD+TAB or the Dock. My advice to eovia (like you really need it! ;-)) is to get Carrara tested and working correctly on OS X 10.2 as this is what is shipping with all new macs, and has been a huge success, selling more copies during the first two days then any previous Mac OS. This is also the version that will prompt most IT folks to upgrade their mac users as it has the best Windows Network interoperability of any Mac OS. -Paul

When you say that it is probably not a OsX bug, I would not bet on it since we have had to work around several nasty bug in OsX so far. Anyway we usually do not wait for Apple to fix its Os and I am confident that we'll figure out how to fix this problem on 10.2 as we eventually did on 10.1

mvernon ( ) posted Mon, 02 September 2002 at 1:41 PM

Thanks for the work done on the patch. I just got a chance to get it so I havn't worked with it a lot . One thing I noticed that still is not working in C2 or the patch is the 'save position' function for Camera 1. In the process if building osmething I come accross many camera angles that i want to come back and expoore later, but once you close the file and re-open it, your saved positions are gone.

i'm also getting the menu bar error in 10.2 but i haven't had too much time to play since getting the patch, so i didn't mention it earlier. but like paul said, cmd-tab, and dock cause the error. i have another way: i have two monitors set up, but carrara is only configured for one. i can then click in the other monitor to access the desktop. (if i hold option while clicking, it hides carrara.) but when i come back to carrara, i get the white osx menu bar over top. (one neat thing about the dual monitor setup i have is that i can use the process viewer and cpu monitor to see how many resources carrara is consuming.) in respect to pauls comment that it isn't the os, i have to say that i haven't seen this kind of error in any other program running natively or in classic, for that matter. but then in respect to charles, i don't run any other programs that replace the desktop and menu bar with customized UI like carrara does. so i don't see how the os can be ruled out yet. on a side note, i just wanted to share with you mac heads that work has finally upgraded our machines to the dual 1ghz with 167mhz bus. and the other night i rendered my kitchen donut scene at 3840x2400 (twice hd res) in the background in under a half hour... while i was burning a cd at 16x. i just thought that was pretty cool. on tuesday i'm going to try rendering my personal carrara stuff in the background while i use photoshop for work. work is so much more exciting all of a sudden. -scott

I tried re-rendering some scenes I had set up and it seems that the bug of transmaps with GI is still there. I didn't see any mention of it in the bug fix list. I wondered if this is indeed a bug you guys are working on or just an inherent problem with GI type of rendering. Can't render imported Posers with transmapped hair, eyelashes and eyebrows with GI until this is fixed. Thanks

PAGZone ( ) posted Tue, 03 September 2002 at 12:03 AM

Scott: Thanks for the comments. I am really jelous now. I really, really want a new Mac. But I have to say that the patch is a noticable speed boost for rendering on my dual 450 G4. The GI renderer is much faster as the Color Sampling bar actually moves fast this go around, thanks for that!

pixelicious ( ) posted Tue, 03 September 2002 at 12:13 AM

jealous? i guess i forgot to mention that they also bought us the nvidia titanium card! and it is all kinds of sick. i have so much processing power at my finger tips that i spent the first week pretty much in shock. it is quite a change from the g3 266 i have at home. i'm glad to here that there is a noticeable speed boost on the mac, because the performance i was getting was very similar to that of the 1ghz pentium 4 that i played with c2 on. i was a little depressed. hopefully the patch puts my mac back on top. -scott

One thing that I noticed still happens after the first patch: 1. Drop a spline object into the scene 2. The Working box control will allow you to hide planes in the Model room 3. Go back to the Assemble room 4. Drop another spline object into the scene 5. The Working box control will no longer allow you to hide/show planes in the Model room - it is still controlling the Working Box in the Assemble room. This is a relatively minor issue, but should be easy to correct. Brian

Rotating a paticle system set to Free still does not work properly, though it was supposedly fixed. The particle system fires at 12:00 and 6:00 but not continuously as it does if set to Bound. Owen

Similar but perhaps unrelated problem... for the first time since I started back on Ray Dream3D I am unable to copy an object, jump into the new instance, and make it a new master to edit. Even though the sequencer claims new masters are being created, all objects in the scene seem to be instances...no matter what object I select, the modelling window is no longer available, and deleting one object deletes the rest. Nothing is linked, nothing is grouped. The masters all have distinct names, and the instances list normally in the properties tray. I can't confirm that things worked before the patch, but I am currently trashing preferences and preparing to do a clean re-install. 8.6 platform, by the way (I know, I know. I really shouldn't expect support for less than 9x)

I'm having a problem with the patch it really doesn't fix the holes in my jeans..and the cappucino button still doesn't make a cappucino materialize in mid air! I don't have C2 (still on 1.1) but I have been using the demo...my problem with the demo being it freezes up my computer...maybe its the updated software GL I don't know. It just freezes up after a minute or two of running 800mhz intel 128 mb ram nividia 32 mb vid card (default with comp:-p) win 98 second edition Brian

nomuse ( ) posted Tue, 08 October 2002 at 2:03 PM

Just deleted the patch and re-installed. Can't confirm that was the fix, but I am able to instance objects now.
