I don't think you can get anything but the most basic trees out of the tree lab. However, some things I have learned are to use smaller leaves than the default settings. I also don't like the ambience in the leaf textures, I always make it zero. The link is to some trees I've made using a lattice for the trunks and about 30 trees for branches.
