I haven't tested this theory yet, but it is reminiscent of the problems that myself and a few others encountered with the P4 'Depth Cue' functionality, and it would explain a lot of odd behaviour that I've witnessed, as well as explaining why a lot of people simply haven't seen this problem (yet).
