Wouldn't suggest making them into .mat's. Bryce takes any image you imput for textures and basically uses it uncompressed, basically turning it back into a bmp/tif. Zipping up .mat's doesn't do nearly as good as just keeping them jpg's in the first place. 4 pics at only 847kb? I think that is good, actually. Or, at least a pretty good average.
