April, Typical playing cards have little symbols to differentiate the 4 suits. The suits in Bridge are clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades in that order for bidding. If you and your partner do not have a strong fit in one particular suit, you may bid "no trump", but never if either of you has a void or singleton in any suit. These 4 symbols were pretty firmly fixed in France, England and the US within the last 200 years. Other countries still use different suit signs. Sometimes they have 5 suits instead of 4. Sometimes they have 4 court cards in each suit, not just 3. Russian decks have 3 jokers, some other countrys' have none. There is still lots of variety, and some of the art on the cards is very beautiful. My point was, though, that with diamonds and clubs as a reference base, Bridge alone could provide plenty of punning opportunities for years. Carolly
