I've always wanted to turn this painting on my wall into a Bryce render and it definitely fits this month's challenge. Is this acceptable or does the entry have to be an original design?

One of the goals with the challenge is to build our skills with Bryce. Beginner or pro, we all have much to learn. I bet you'd learn more by making an original design. In direct answer to your question, you can read the Monthly Challenge Rules link just under the forum logo.

Well I remember Aldaron did a bryce rendition of a painting by Tim Hildebrandt. So I guess you are definitely allowed to redo a painting in Bryce. However please do check the rules of the challenges all the same.

Well isn't it a challenge in itself to construct a copy of a painting in Bryce. It's not just the idea that's important but the technics used in putting the image together. I think it should be allowed.

Yes you do learn a lot in recreating a painting. Trying to get the same lighting color, etc. is a great learning experience in working with lights an materials. On that note I really need to work on original material rather than other's work. :)

Submit what you want, it's only a bit of fun. As long as the render's yours, I can't see anyone would be bothered.

Now that you brought up the subject . . . . my entry this month is an upgrade from a painting I completed in 1991. The difference. . . . my original painting took two months to complete . . . . . my entry image . . . several evenings of work. I have been contemplating creating my roughs in Bryce and then painting them onto canvas.

Did you start copying the painting this month after hearing the challenge? It should be just fine. I thought the rule was you couldn't pull work you did last year and resubmit it, not that you couldn't copy your or someone else's work. This isn't a finished work that has been sitting on your computer or something out of another bryce gallery site you posted long ago? I have a harem room in the marketplace that would be great for the challenge. Problem is I've had four months off and on to work on it. I even had the basic room done with all of the textures set before the start of the challenge. I also have a jason and the argonauts scene with a temple built, skeletons and warriors posed etc. Add to this a greek Trireme pulled into bryce and textured I could drop into the scene. I could pull of a fantasy scene in about a day using parts from other work. Using these bits and elements would give me a big leg up. I also don't post finished scenes. I don't use them because I see them as the non-original work implied in the rules.

Nothing in the rules mentioned using another's design but I thought I'd ask anyway. And no, I haven't started anything yet. I was planning on doing it anyway so we'll see if I finish by the end of the challenge. Thanks for the input.

Hey, I must have misunderstood. If you want to recreate a painting in Bryce, that does sound like a good idea. I agree that you can learn by recreating what others do. So if were thinking about doing something like Nuski, go for it. I learned more about free figure drawing in one session than I did all year long when I sat behind my sister and drew what she drew (instead of struggling with where to start, etc.)
