Subject: Texture, texture, texture...help!

Hi I'm having problems with getting the texture to look right. When I apply the mountian/terrain texture I get the bloby texture you see. I tried changing the scale of the texture, played with the bump adjustment(both plus & minius), but no luck. I tried using the stones/rocks texture and that seems to work fine. What am I doing wrong? Unfortantly the stones/rocks textures do not have trees/brush etc. confused

Did you set a higher resolution on the terrain editor?

I just tried the same thing you have there, I believe the tex you used on the left is lowlands. I had trouble with it too. (NOTE: no lowlands on mountains) :) The one on the right looks fine, maybe a bit more bump. Try a few others. Good luck

I changed the textures, added more bump, increased the resolution. It looks a lot better. Is there any way I can get more detail in the texture, and maybe lose the repetive pattern in the island on the left?

The water on the left is just reflecting the image of your terrain.

I think you are wanting to "size" the TEXTURE at this point, and not change the resolution of the geometry of the rocks or mountains. In the top illustration of the Material Editor, you can see the size setting for the texture at 1,1,1 causes the texture to look too large and blocky. In the bottom illustration I have cranked the settings to 44,44,44 and you can see that the texture is now much more detailed. In other words, to increase the numerical value of the texture size actually makes the size of the texture smaller. Doesn't seem very intuitive does it. It helps me to think that higher texture size increases the DETAIL of the texture, not the relative SIZE of it. Tjohn

Wow! I learned more today than I did in the last couple of weeks of struggling. You guys are fantastic, thank you. I was getting a little overwhelmed with the program. I wanted to throw up my hands and quit. I'm keeping my eye on the ball(your terrific Bryce art), it is one of those "the more you know, the more you know, you don't know. I changed the scale, added an island, modified the water. Is it possible to sculpt the terrain? I know about the terrain editor and the erode etc buttons. I tried adding with the terrain tool, but I have trouble trying to finiess it.

How do you click on/select something that is behind another object?

Looking much improved! Yes, you can paint on the terrain (kinda clunky and a pretty steep learning curve for me). But you'll need to spend some time with the manual and go through the tutorials in it for the Terrain Editor, so you'll understand how it works (essential!). The very best advice, RTM (read the manual) or RTFM for those like me who only read the manual when all else fails. :^) Second best advice: get a copy of Susan Kitchens' Real World Bryce 4. It's actually better than the manual, but you have to purchase it, and you should already have the manual.

"How do you click on/select something that is behind another object?" In the windows version, you can use Ctrl-left click on the object and highlight the name of the one you want to select. Then only that object will be selected. If you want to select more than one object that is behind one you don't want to select use Ctrl/Shift-left click and select the names of the objects you want. I only found out about this recently myself. I had been selecting my objects that had other objects in the way by Tab-ing through them all. All that wasted button pushing (sigh). Sorry if you have a Mac, don't know anything about it. By the way, am I one of the last to know that you can use the same method to select individual objects in a group without ungrouping first? It sures speeds up the process of adjusting textures on Poser figures.

Yep, I have the manual, and I do read it, but sometimes I get confused, don't know what to ask, or where to go. I'm trying, I will pick up Kitchen's book. I have a PC.

On the Mac you can control click on an individual member of a group. I noticed on a Mac with Os X with Jaguar installed sometimes ctrl-click does not work. Have to exit Bryce and rerun it or restart the whole session.

I wasn't trying to hint you might not have the manual. :^) And when you got confused, you came to the right place. This is where I come (I'm confused a lot! LOL), the folks here are Bryce experts and can help with anything. I come in to read the posts here all the time and I think I've learned more here in the past year or so than I ever got out of a book.

Something to consider...
Can vary a terrain's appearance, buy duplicating a terrain & then resize, change angles, etc... change the parameters for the same texture ( or change to another texture altogether) and have both terrains in virtually the same space... or create another terrain that is different physically and overlap, jut out of, rise out of and above, etc....
A low tech technique that I'm a bit fond of, but doing this will increase the scene's poly count and will increase your render times....
Also can use a paint program and "paint" a terrain map to use, and then there's importing a bitmap to use as a terrain.....
Have fun, play and experiment.

I'll try that technique today. I'm still having a problem moving things to the foreground/background. I tried grabing the object with the pointer, grabing thr X, Y, Z thingies, but it just goes "underground, or ths overlap oddly. I know I'm doing something stupid, but I don't know what.

use all your camera views... in a perspective view, I very rarely reposition anything directly, but instead use the move tool in the edit controls. Using the ortho views (top, front, left, right) it is much easier to grab your object and move it where you want it. Personally, I use the directors cam and top view most often to position objects, occasionally using front and side views when necessary.

I tried it, works great. I really appreicat your help. I changed a couple of things, but the "Mounds" I added to the foreground seem blurry. I increased the resolution, added noise, no change.

Thanks again everyone, I feel like I really learned a lot, you have been a tremendous help. I was up late working on this stuff last night, and first thing this morning. This program really gets you hooked, especialy when you start to see some results. I realize I got a long way to go, but I'm on the road now. Thanks

tjohn I talking about natural formation caused by wind(out west) and water(on the coast). I've seen Bryce Pics of them. I attached a very, very, very, rough sketch I just did to give you an idea of what I mean.

the easiest way I can think of is to create a terrain of suitable size and shape, then use a lattice to negative boolean a hole out of the middle of it.

Hi tjohn I've been struggling with your tutorial. Your tut was great, but like you said I had to experiment with the editor trying to get the look I wanted. I'm working on trying to get a more natural shape like yours. You knocked out that tut in no time, but after a couple of days I'm still trying to get that great look you have on your tut bridge. Since the Bryce 5 full, and Bryce 5 upgrade have reduced prices, do you think Bryce 6, is on the way? I'm just starting to learn Bryce 5, Bryce 6 will knock me back to square one.
