I was dressed in fleece, down jacket, and took a blanket for the ground and slipped up to Mt Diablo. With 7 million people here in the Bay Area, I knew that Tilden or the Hicks observatory would be crowded, and I wanted to be further out. There was no time to drive to Yosemite (I had originally thought about going up to the gate at Crane Flat which is 6,000' and walking out to the meadow there... but would have been lying in snow most likely). Diablo was cold enough. Basically, I didn't look at the moon, which left half the sky, and plenty of streakers. The best fireballs with the longest trails are usually lower down anyway. There was a small group on the top of the rise I chose for viewing. From conversation it was apparent the 4 of them were all artists just out of school. So we talked about important things... such as archival over immediacy, art as communication and the shared experience, multimedia versus purity of form and material... with examples from Goldsworthy and other contemporary artists. They had staked out the spot last year. I'll meet them there again next year. Carolly
