It stands for High Dynamic Range Imaging. It can't be done in Bryce, just simulated. In real HDRI, the surrounding environment is made up of bitmaps that have unlimited brightness for each of their pixels. So instead of having 0..255 like in a BMP, you could have 300, or 3000, or 300000000! The light is then used to light the whole scene, and also provide reflections.
