heyas; that's very strange. it looks as if the smoothing algorithm is over-smoothing your character version as oppossed to the imported version. or it is degenerating the facets. but why, i can't imagine. check your model for 1, 2, or greater than 4 point polys (in lightwave). only use tris and quads. check for polygons that are overlapping. make sure there's no doubled vertices sticking out not attached to anything.... also, if your obj file is saved with normals, try getting rid of them. uvmapper has an option not to save those; use that for poser. these are just wild guesses, though. dunno what's up. :/
