The design of a lighthouse depends largely on when it was built. Portland Head Light (1791, comm. George Washington), Maine, (one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world) is typical of older lighthouses with a single white beam, with a 4 second rotation. Many newer lighthouses have white and/or red beams, some with multiple fresnel lenses allowing for multiple beams.
