I had this problem before I switched to P5 (now I have a whole lot of new problems ;-). Anyway, I tried PBooost by Hogwarden and it helped a LOT. Check out the product description and see if it would help your problem. It also has Deep File Editor, which is very helpful in locating textures, bumps and transparencies if I recall correctly.
