My view is that the sky colors are just not right, too dull and also as the sun goes down the amount of sunlight is way too dim. I always use a gradient backdrop along with the Realistic Sky. To me it just works better and is much less hassle to get a nice sky with some brightness & depth. You can use the built-in gradient backdrop or create your own in Photoshop.

I recommend GeoControl for terrain creation, it's very easy to use and has lots of flexibility.
They also have a demo-version:

One way to do it is to duplicate the terrain and then use an alpha map in the shader to mask off the bulk of the secondĀ terrain you don't want to see.Ā Also, if you blur the alpha map, the transition between the two shaders will be less noticable.

Select all the objects and under the "edit" menu there's a group command. Of course, resizing lights may affect any falloff settings relative to the distance away from an object.

Cool, thanks. Looks like I'll be able to do what I want. ThisĀ is for my Master Trees project that uses about 100 Carrara trees to build a single tree, so each Carrara tree is basically a small branch. I think this shading method will allow me add some more diversity and realism to the foliage. Every leaf the sameĀ is not very realistic.

I think that you basically used a gradient on the entire tree. I'm going for a shader where the outer leaves are gradually lighter than the inner leaves.

Corel X4 is out for a while now. The advantage to buying Corel is you also get a good layout program and a good photo editing program for a lot less than Adobe CS. I have Adobe CS3 and Corel X4 and I use Corel more.

Some carĀ modeling tutes. Even though they're from different programs, the same principles apply.
