depending on the export format, you actually get nulls in some software for the instances, I know iClone 6 using FBX I can send duplicates to those "bones" if I export a whole scene
maybe Alienator will work otherwise replacing your instances with tiny triangles or plane primitives (a triangle is half a plane primitive created using the geometry editor if polycount an issue)

You're right. I hadn't thought about that. DAZ has been alternately acquiring good things then discarding them for longer than I was remembering. Each time they finish, DAZ is smaller.
I started off with iClone 3 then got Carrara 5 free on a Magazine disc, upgraded to Carrara 6 through DAZ and bought Poser 7
stopped at Poser 11 and obviously Carrara 8.5 as development sadly ended
I never really used DAZ studio much until I got a Desktop as it just crashed on my laptop, Carrara and Poser ran quite well
I finally started with D|S4 and Genesis basically
I do use D|S now of course but mostly because I want to use content that is difficult to use in Carrara, it never was my first choice
they keep adding roadblocks though, I cannot even use Premier if I wanted to due to the Connect PostgreSQL requirements
let alone the content in Carrara even though Genesis 9 can work in Carrara

you probably can move them to the base, I had to do that a few times with 3DU figures for iClone 6, in edit mode there is property mover

yeah DAZ store search is terrible,
I remember when someone wanted an actual tumbleweed for a wild west street scene, and everyone kept linking that horse 🤣

yeah posing them in a sort of Tpose is needed to set them up but it will play imported animations correctly

I use iClone 6 and have no issues other than having to set up everything manually in expression editor in 3DX6 every time
I cannot speak for the later better improved pipeline
I just do everything manually, even use my own bone based facials for genesis 3,8,8.1 and 9
I do this for Unreal Engine and Twinmotion (which doesn't support vertex morphs/Blendshapes) too

I will weigh in on my own situation. I like Genesis 9,
already bought a lot of it's content
but
I just want to use the content I pay to use,
connect and encryption prevents that while doing utterly nothing to stop the pirates from stealing it.
smart content while lovely no longer works on my current PC, let alone any other new PostGreSQL dependent features maybe it will when I save money not buying DAZ stuff on my next PC (Ironically it works on my old Win7)
Connect will not work with Carrara my favourite software but Genisis 9 does with a few adaptions
so, it basically comes down to if I can buy useable content, if I could, I would consider Premier the occasional month, as it stands, I would be wasting my money
people will speak with their wallets, if it sells, good for DAZ, if not they may reconsider

even if you can do it, the size of the files are horrendous, you are better off creating fur in your target app if you can
I have exported rigged strandbased head hair with bones but only by itself, weird stuff happens with FBX and fitted to a figure, unlike clothing it doesn't merge skeletons
full body furs are very hit or miss depending how the PA did it
(not that we can tell being PA only but guessing those you can hide bones on are the ones that export as probably rigged fibermesh converted to iray curves)
and SBH editor hairs don't export rigged
but not many apps will load millions of polygons which it ends up being

I transfer morphs between them all easily enough using clone shapes and fitting the base resolution meshes to each other and exporting obj files for morphloader
just adjust rigging to shape, run erc freeze, save the new morph and you are good to go
there is no conspiracy and multitudes of tutorials out there
you may need to repose the thigh in/out for G9 as a bit different before creating your morph shape
