Did we use poser for vicky or did we use vicky for poser ?
Which is more important poser or vicky ?
Would there be a poser with out vicky ?Even thou no one ask I'll tell my philosophy.
Which app's do I hold a loyalty to ? NONE !
Which app's will I use ? ALL !
No one will defeat me ,hold me back ,or stop me from reaching my goals, ever.
This is the core of the issue: do you set out to create a certain image and select accordingly applications and assets or you first run your pet app and then see what you can do with it? From the comments posted in the last week, a very vocal subset of this community staunchly subscribes the second option. Like RorrKonn, I subscribe to the first. For me, every tool I use and every asset I own is useful, none of them is necessary or, utterly laughable concept, something to be "loyal" to. Even more important, I am always refining my workflow; I do not stick with an old method when there is a new, provably better one.

One very unfortunate thing is that I read G3 is heavy on polys, and what a shame, cause if they'd taken the other route of making it even leaner, they would effectively be able to compete with iClone if they caught up on the animation features (which for DS, shouldn't be too difficult because the system is already half-way decent).
A (new) pair of glasses is in order. Exactly 17000 quads, no tris.

You don't want to step on the train? we are not forcing you, you are free to remain on the platform. We will be too busy playing with the current round of new wonderful toys to miss you.

Smith Micro is in no position to buy out DAZ. They are a publicly traded company, it doesn't take much to find their financials. Since DAZ is not a publicly traded company I have no idea if the reverse is possible, or even desired. Why would DAZ want to maintain to separate, very high maintenance programs that do the same thing? Poser may end up with somebody else, I doubt seriously it would be DAZ.
In another thread, WandW hoped to shoot down a comment of mine and instead egregiously shoot him/her-self in a foot providing me with some very interesting information. In this angle of the ring, the VC behind DAZ, NTT Docomo Capital, the investment branch of NTT Docomo. NTT Docomo is the predominant mobile operator of Japan with about 23,000 employees and 4.2 trillion Yen revenues. The story does not end here, since NTT Docomo is part of the NTT empire with 220,000 employees and 10.5 trillion Yen revenues.
On the other side of the ring is SmithMicro, 380 employees and 100 million $ revenues, a florid firm which spends half of its time trying not to be delisted from NASDAQ due to the too low share price.
Poser could be bought by DAZ with the rounding errors of NTT Docomo Capital balance sheet. But why should DAZ buy it? there is no technology in Poser still worth the cost of paying the lawyers to prepare the documents.

Steve Cooper made a wise decision not to follow DAZ down that rabbit hole.
IIRC Steve Cooper left SmithMicro. Hint about who is not going down which hole?

@Razor42: pumeco asserts (apparently not for plain trolling/flamebait purposes) that Debian is poised to achieve world domination; I don't see your efforts aiming to discuss rationally with him being met with a resouding success.

@Razor42: the discussions about "industry standards" with derogatory quotes stems from the posters never having looked outside of their tiny Poser ghetto. If they had ever visited sites like GCSociety or fxguide, expanding their painfully limited vision of the world, they would not keep posting silly comments.

@ jestmart, bhoins, mishamcm: the issue is not not knowning what to do, the issue is the cold determination to stomp feet because things are changing.

As far as Genesis 3's timing, this is the week before the end of a financial quarter, and a new figure gives DAZ' sales a nice little boost for the next earnings calculation....
DAZ is privately held, they don't need to perform tricks with their financials.

Apparently Genesis 3 doesn't work in DAZ Carrara, which I always considered a pro app...
Carrara was a pro app, many many moons ago. Now e.g. Blender run rings around it, let along beast like MODO or 3DMax or Maya.

this new version may not even run on my computer
What about actually trying before declaring an emergency?

I still stick to my opinion I had back then: Given that Poser and Studio aren't polygon sensitive for quite some time now, there is no inherent value in submitting oneself to the "industry standard" low res mesh + SubD paradigma. But they are much easier to sculpt for the hobbyist who doesn't have all those "professional tools" at his disposal. Anyway, SubD is just another "Industry standard" that the hobbyist community lived happily without for years without ever missing it.
On the contrary, the non-SubD meshes have advantages that are now thrown away just to lure "the industry" in.
If you take away BOTH our polygons as well as the tools to properly replace them, you will have to live with the fact that we don't use your product.
I just wanted to point out that while the Empress doth hath clothes, she might miss a few pieces of underwear.
Import the mesh into Blender.
add as Sub-D modifier (to simulate the situation of the smoothed mesh in Studio).
switch to to sculpt mode, make sure that dynamic topology is not active, sculpt to your heart content the coarse part of the morph. 4. remove the Sub-D modifier, export the mesh as morph target.
add a Multiresultion modifier.
go again to sculpt mode (now no problem if you have dynamic topology active), sculpt as many details as you want, going up in levels as much as required.
bake the normal map using the current settings of the Multiresolution modifier (difference between coarse and hires mesh).
enjoy your creation.
To me the Empress appears be fully and modestly clothed.

So all all this menacing talk about Blender, Makehuman,Iclone Daz Studio et al, makes for nice web Forum Rhetoric
The more I look at the situation, the more I think that Poser users are not interested in creating 3D art but in specifically using Poser. It would be an interesting experiment to offer them a perpetual 3DStudio/Maya/MODO/Houdini ownership/upgrade in exchange for Poser: I bet that they would decline the offer.
Shoehoring G3F in Poser? one tells them that it cannot work for rigging reasons and still they stubbornly try to do so. No need for comments.

...seems... ...probably... ...suspect...
3dlight has been so abandoned by DAZ that the 4.8 build includes a recent and significantly faster version w.r.t. 4.7. Give it a try.
While we are in the real try vs. bitching upon hypothesis subject, I suggest you to explore for real how Iray and G3 work on your box. On my six years old workhorse main computer they work pleasantly, on my lowly 500 euro notebook with an entry level NVIDIA card even better.
