Sort of on this topic - I wonder if there is an easy way to determine which of the ++morphs any particular character uses? If so, you could load just those into your V4.2 to begin with, plus any others as you need them.

(It might be worth raising another thread for this Q).

Thanks, alizea. As it happens, I just tried loading up the scene a few seconds ago, and everything is working okay again. A window comes up during loading, with the message: Please locate ""   (blank file name) which I have to skip, but it does not seem to affect anything.

If the next scene reload doesn't work, I'll dive into the hierarchy editor - with a brief backward glance and a parting "I am just going outside and may be some time"....

 Poser needs them if you have more than one figure in your scene. Use the first one to magnetise to your first V4 character, and subsequent ones for Victoria 1, Victoria 2, etc.
That's what the manual says anyhow. Me, I can't them them to do anything useful anyway.

Point 1 - in my P7 (for Mac) it's the Shadow Blur Radius setting (for each light that is casting shadows).

Point 2 - in my Render Settings it's the slider bottom right labelled Post filter size and Post filter type (I generally use size 2, and Gaussian because I like the sound of it).

Hee hee - silly me! I redid the render with the two mirrors, and of course her reflection is starkers now! Oh well, she might as well join the rest of the gang and rip everything off anyway.

Or I'll just forget about using a combination of AO, invisible clothing parts, and reflections. sigh the limitations we artists have to endure.

Just to round this off, the strange 'shadows' of the invisible skirt (and top) parts were caused by the ambient occlusion I was using with my single IBL light. As I wanted AO in my piccie, the answer was simply to make the skirt and top invisible to raytracing, and - poof! - AO shadows done gone.
There were no shadows at the default render settings, as raytracing is switched off, so no AO.

Thank you Marque, you are right, and I have just done that!
I have seen renders where this works fine, so it must be me. But hopefully the vendor will be able to point me in the right direction.
Thanks to Dr Geep too, I'll try those things in the meantime.

If I ruled the world, a program that got itself into a state where something was wrong and it didn't know what to do would just say "AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!".
That way no-one would be misled.

Arcadia, couldn't this message, as it suggests, also mean that it cannot find an image map - one that is only used when rendering, and not for preview, such as a displacement map?

Or does Poser check the availability of **all **image maps at the time of loading a figure/prop?

If it is due to a missing render-time image map, Phily should be able to find which figure/prop is responsible, and eventually which image map is missing, by a process of elimination.

Of course, I could well be talking through my bumsies...

Hmm... it's difficult without the tell-tale details that we unconsciously pick up on when we guess someone's age. I've seen some 16-year olds who could look like this without my specs on (I mean me, not them) and some in their mid-thirties.

But I would hazard a guess at 27 and three quarters.

I know awready! Sorry, I don't know why it went like that, and I couldn't fix it. If this comes out the same, sorry again. What I wrote was not much help anyway... just sympathy.
