Thread: Bookreview of the Carrara 5 Pro Handbook. | Forum: Carrara
I didn't see this thread until just now and without taking sides or saying anything good or bad or anything else, the first thing that comes to my mind is my mom telling everyone "go to your room"! lol (I have 7 older brothers and sisters and that happened a lot growing up ;) I'm loud and obnoxious I know, but I like to look at both sides of everything and more importantly the bigger picture (if I can). Carrara 5/Hexagon are great programs and there's still alot to learn about them (for me at least). So first off, thanks to all the guys and girls who make that learning easier and fun. Book or no book, forum or no forum, yahoo or no yahoo etc... I don't have to name names or say who of the dozens of folks here and on the other lists have helped me learn in the last couple of years. There's too many to count, but every time you help me or someone else out you do a good thing and that's just the way it is, so we should keep on doing just that because that's why we love 3d,... All of us. Carl did drop off the map I guess with his new baby so to wrap up the new tools/features we'll have to get creative maybe. Any Ideas?
Thread: Landscape tutorial by Johannes Rosenberg / cajomi | Forum: Carrara
You can get rid of the workingbox simply by clicking the icons on the top of the assembly screen, I usually just leave the ground plane on as a single reference point, otherwise it's a bit of an illusion because you can scale up as much as you like just about. Johannes did an awesome job on that tut and it would be cool to see it updated. As for assembly itself in carrara, the more you can model "in place" the better off you are and for architectural stuff well ya, it would be nice to have something similar to "snap to" bounding box to bounding box or something so you could snap a car to a road or snap a dish to a table top etc... And then nudge it with the universal manipulator or something... The Universal manipulator supposedly coming out in C6 will be cool, but it may also be behind to some degree by the time it gets there. Scene management tools will be welcome because it's so easy to build a ton of models in hex and then have to place them with the somewhat dated move tool and collision detection (if you even bother to use it).
Thread: shader previews don't look like the material they are supposed to be | Forum: Carrara
"N" for nudity? I think it's checked, but really they're just cartoons when you stop and think about it. I do tend to think that the same effect could be had by taking a shot of a foot or hand or whatever though fwiw...

Shonner, the green reflections are just a default, open the interactive renderer and uncheck reflection to get rid of it. I actually reported this to support wondering where it came from; place a sphere in a new blank scene and add any reflective shader (mirror or whatever) and you'll see a terrain reflection in it, it's by design.

I've always been exporting maps and hand painting stuff in 2d, which is a nightmare and pretty hit or miss for the most part, I never knew this was possible until now... Excellent stuff Patrick.

I'm taking notes and playing with the settings, but I havn't quite got it yet. I see what you did, but not exactly how you did it and specifically how you determine the height that you want the white layer to go to on any given terrain. It starts at -833333 and goes to 833333 in the range and I did 1 ft to 3 ft for instance with no luck yet just trying to isolate a white band anywhere on the terrain. Any chance of another mini-tut with settings and more screen grabs? :) I want to get this down, it's awesome. Steven

Great read on Eovia, thanks Patrick! for the distribution shader, (black and white) I have been doing what Thomas did in his tutorial and taking a screen grab and editing in ps, but can it be done inside carrara? Just wondering, because his detail looks so good as if it were painted in carrara itself.

Thread: has anyone else ordered the boxed version of carrara 5 yet? | Forum: Carrara
This thread is somewhat venemous and industrial to spite and sloth and avarice... I am ashamed that anonymous users are so quick to point fingers and propogate phrases like "yes men" and interject grandiose conspiricay theories of greed over a user manual. I can't beleive you actually think your arguments are just and true, they simply are not. They are repulsive and I feel bad for Charles being treated this way. The fact of the matter is that the user manual issue is a molehill on an otherwise majestic mountain range. These same people complain when their Triple Mocha Latte is 2 degrees under temperature. Back in the 90's before the tech bubble burst, software development took two years per version typically. There was less development competition because there were fewer applications and a wider gap and definately less capability. Back then devs and tech teams had ample time and resources to prepare the dust catchers called printed user manuals. Since those dark ages, development has skyrocketed because newer and better development applications exist today and as a result, new editions can be put out on a yearly basis if not sooner. This was unheard of a decade ago. The fact of the matter is, by the time you have finished reading your nice cushy manual with your slightly under-hot Triple Mocha latte, it has already been outdated by the first patch and what would you have a software company do, send you a patch manual? How idiotic can it get... I am done, do your best... Steven
